Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

I will post some pictures later this afternoon.

We are having record floods in our area from the record rains. People are being evacuated in low lying areas around the river and the lake (mississippi river and reelfoot lake). They are scared the levees are going to break that surround the river. Some houses have already been flooded and we haven't reached our crest yet. The river is at the top of the levees even since they were extended 2 feet.

Good news there is no rain in our forecast. Bad news it is raining up north, and that will come to us.

Army men are here guarding roads, cute young men that posed for me yesterday. They had no info to give though!

As far as my babies go that have been planted, some look sad, color distoration already. I don't know if they will make it, but I am keeping both eyes on them. So that is going to be a waiting game!

Here in west tennesse we are having floods, but alabama got hit hard with tornadoes. Has anyone heard from drippy??

I watch the weather religiously every morning, not that its ever accurate- sometimes a good thing, sometimes a bad thing. We were supposed to have pretty significant rain last night and again this weekend. We got lucky at my house and only got a light rain, and there's rain "chances" Saturday night and Sunday. I like the phrase rain chances, because it gives me hope. Then I watch the radar and try to predict if its going to go south or north or possibly dissipate before getting here. I have got to till in my veggie garden soon. I got a little in last night with the little mantis tiller, after mowing our yard, but it was really too wet to help very much. Some kind of grass and horseweeds are sprouting EVERYWHERE. I also need to get those corn and beans in the ground soon. I have almost an acres of gardens and wondering yet again what have I gotten myself into. Its a lot of work and worry.

Bookjunky, what part of illinois?? I noticed where cairo has been totally evacuated!

The breach in the birds point levee gave little to no relief to us that we know about. Did it at least help you guys??

RE: Rain/Floods/

I thought they blew the levee on the other side of the Mississippi river so that they would save Cairo. I didn't realize they had evacuated the entire city. I'm not near there though. Cairo is the very southern end of Illinois. I'm at the northern edge of "southern Illinois."

Hi, I'm back online after 9 days with no power - EF5 tornado passed 1/2 mile from our house. Very fortunate here - one tree down, & I lost a significant number of WS seedlings, but I start so many I still have plenty left (not to mention seeds to start more into the next century).

The devastation a half mile northeast of here is sickening, though. Like a giant wrecking ball came through. The Alabama people, though, are absolutely awesome, and everyone is banding together to help.

The birds point levee is in missouri, if I am not mistaken they blew another spot yesterday. I am in union city tennessee or obion county.

Here are a few pictures of what it looks like around here. Some places were so bad we couldn't access them. I truly believe they have the guardsmen in place to keep people out from sight seeing in case the levees do break.

First are the guardsmen this is in hickman kentucky.

My mother in laws house, she has been evacuated. She lives in walnut log which is right on the lake.

A shot of some farmland being effected.

Follow the utility poles and you will see where the road is suppose to be, on either side of the road is farmland.

So glad you're OK, Drippy. But 9 days without power must have been awful. Longest I've ever been without power was 6 days, and I was a grouchy, miserable old bear.

Record rains here too, any my WSown babies look like crap. Everything is yellow from too much water. I hardly have any annual sprouts - no doubt from NO SUN and cold. Temps are way below normal. It really sucks.

Karen

Glad to hear that you are okay, Drippy. I wish you all can send us some of that rain. It keeps blowin, out to sea.

Carolyn, wow! And I thought we had a lot of water! We had, I'm estimating, 5-6 inches of rain on the 27th, and a few folks around had water in their houses. Our creek overflowed its banks, as did the drainage ditches, but there was enough yard between them and the house that we stayed dry inside.

Karen, every time I would start to get a little antsy about the power, I just kept reminding myself (a) how lucky I was and (b) the crews, not just from northern AL but from all over the country, were out working 24/7 to restore power to us. We had another soaker day on Monday, yet they were all out in raincoats working on the electricity. Braver people than I!

Hot coffee was first order of business, followed by hot shower. Woohoo!

RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

We lost our power for like 2 days in the hot summer. I remember taking a lot of COLD baths to cool us off. That was miserable!! Girl I know you probably took an extra long hot shower today. Just one question though. Did you look like a prune when you got out?? LOL totally teasing of course!!

The lake seems to be receding in some parts so this is a good thing.

Here is another shot I took this afternoon. My southern charm scored me this shot. Tennessee state troopers are guarding this spot and if you haven't figured me out by my text yet well you will have no doubt after you here this to how I truly am.

We drive down by the road closed signs and I roll down my window and yell out the window. "Can I get out and look at the water?" state trooper said "No" I asked "Even to take a picture" he shook his head then I asked "Can I hand you my camera and you take a shot for me?" While handing my camera out the window while cheesing a big huge smile. The state trooper laughed shook his head and motioned for me to come up there and said "just make it fast" smiling the entire time!! Hee Hee

And here is the shot!!

This is the river and I am standing on the top of the levee. The river normally is about 100 to 150 feet from the furthest utility pole on the right hand side. I was dumbfounded when I saw in person how close the water was to the top!! Now I know for sure why they are guarding this thing so tightly!!

RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

Yes, the birds point levee is in Missouri and let me tell you how pissed off the farmers are about it. There are several miles of farm land now under water after they blew that levee. The lawsuit have started. I'm in Kansas where we have our own problems too much rain some areas (like mine) and none in other parts of the state. We have our own tornado headaches but nothing compare to what happened in Alabama or the flooding going on in your neck of the woods.

 o
RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

We are really lucky compared to alabama!! One thing about our situation is that we have had time to evacuate.

Farmers on all sides of the river and around the tributary creeks and rivers are suffering major. Nothing compared to how missouri is suffering around the birds point levee. I think it is horrible that 133,000 acres and 90 homes were damaged just for the city of CAIRO!! Cairo is a town that is on the verge of being a ghost town, along with hickman kentucky. That is my take on it though and I sure don't mean to stir up a hornets nest when I say that, but I hope missouri wins the case, though I doubt they will!

Somebody please send us some of that rain!

RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

The state government in Louisiana has announced that the flood gates will be opened to drain off the rising Mississippi. Livestock must be moved & fields will be flooded. Although people knew they were occupying a flood plain they did not anticipate the necessity of opening the flood gates. After terrible floods in 1926 & 1927 when vast areas were flooded in Louisiana, flood gates were built & thus levees do not have to be blown up here. The results of opening the flood gates are really unknown. I am grateful to be north of the flood gates.

 o
RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

River I am glad your north of where they are going to open the gates. I was just watching cnn and they were saying 22 feet above flood stage in some parts.

Be careful and keep us posted!!

 o
RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

I misread that chart it said 17.5 feet above flood stage on may 22. Oops!!

 o
RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

So glad you gals are alright!

 o
RE: Rain/Floods/Tornadoes and our babies

Thank you, Carolyn, I am so glad that you are ok. Drippy, too. Thanks, gardenusual. I really feel for everyone who's affected, whose home and/or job has been wiped out or is being threatened. Livestock, crops, wildlife. The lesson I learned from Hurricane Katrina is that there is an amazing resiliency, more than I would have ever thought possible. People just keep on truckin' through whatever life throws their way. They are very inspiring. New meaning right now to that phrase "The Good Lord willin' and the creeks don't rise!" Hope everyone stays high and dry!
