mild winter/hoards of hungry insects

I'd heard the warnings that our unusually mild winter would mean more ticks here on Long Island, which are a real plague.

But I had not thought much about increases in garden pest insects because of the mild winter until I took a stroll through some of my recently planted patches of new seedlings today...

Rolly Polly bugs (water bugs) gnawing happily away on my pansies..

SOMETHING leaving teeth marks all over the strawflower foliage. Chunks of foliage missing.

Many seedlings of different kinds missing leaves entirely -for example, a HOS of 10 thin seedlings now has 5 without "tops", just a thin base stalk left. You can see that top leaves were gnawed off.

Its gotten cooler again and I find it frustrating as I think a little heat would get things growing faster/fuller and less likely to be killed by insect damage.

Anyone else experiencing this?
Nancy

Yes! From what I'm seeing here we're in for a buggy year. Yellowjackets are already out in force, enough so that I'm going to put up an attractant/trap hanger to try to get ahead of them. I had to spray my way into the garden shed today, yeesh! We have naturally gravelly ground that's always been a haven for earwigs, but I think they're going to be real bad this year from what I'm seeing, and pill bugs are abundant too already.

I haven't seen as much damage as you have, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled & planting more insectary plants in the garden than I usually do.

Our winter was so mild that one variety of French heirloom romaine came back up from the roots...I'd never had that happen here! We also ate chard, kale & collards all winter, which is also unusual.

I've been seeing lots of rolly polly's and a few mosquitos too, the really big ones. Yellow jackets, and a wasp here and there too. Like organic green jeans above I too have the yellow jacket traps but haven't put them out yet. Been meaning to tell you Nancy...you know the large salad containers...after winter sowing my tomatoes this season and the heat we had they really grew fast, so I put the bottom of one salad container on top of the other and they had lots more room to grow, just an FYI, LOL, I know you don't grow veggies but incase any thing gets too leggy before its too early to uncover. Sorry about the length of this, :)
