Plume Poppy, why notY???

2009, I was given a plume poppy. We dug it from her yard. It was June that time. When I transplanted it the same day, it didn't make it.

2010, bought seeds, nothing germinated.

2011, received seeds, nothing germinated.

This is the plant that I've been wanting for years. How come, I can't get it to grow.

I'll consider myself a real gardener because I'm a very patient man. HEHEHE. :D

Sometimes Neil, things are just not meant to be. It's like some of us with KMOTGG (Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate) - just can't. And, so, we just have to accept it.

On the other hand, maybe you are only suppose to grow this plant later on in life and grow another plant for now.

I know you are very patient. I also know you will not give up on this plant because it is truly a beauty. I broke my crystal ball yesterday so I can't tell if it will ever make it to your gardens, but I hope you have fun trying to get it there!! :O)

I love how new plants (new to me) are talked about here. I had to look up plume poppy and it is gorgeous. I can see why you want to grow it, Neil. It looks so tropical I figured I couldn't have it, but the info says zone 3 - 10.

I hope you are able to get it going some time. I'll be on the lookout for it now too. Thanks!

If you ever get one, be aware that it tends to be VERY aggressive~spreads by long rope-like runners. I think it's beautiful & well worth the extra work it takes to keep it under control. I've read that the seeds have low germination & do not require cold treatment, so it probably isn't a good candidate for winter sowing.

Thanks everyone!

Ellen had it for many years(near Plant Swap place) and it wasn't aggressive according to her. But it's true, it can be very aggressive on other zones. I also asked Olbrich Garden since they have it and they told that it's well behaved.

You should grow it :)

Thanks Nicole!

I am so glad someone brought this up. I too bought a ton of seeds and nothing germinated so I broke down and actually purchased 2 plants. 1 am I going to try in a large container but if anyone has any expereince, I am assuming I can control the runners by breaking them apart each year.. true? kinda like what I do with my giant reed plant that I LOVE!!! thoughts?
