Just Planting Out Now

I remember in April lots of people in the forum were saying the earlier the better for planting out their WS items. I did a few, but they were so tiny it was difficult especially as they were perennials and I was putting them into established beds. I am just now getting to the rest of them, and glad I waited! They are huge and sturdy!!

I do the same, still have several to plant out. They'd get lost if I planted them out when they are so small.

I mostly wait, too. Wintersowing seems to be like other gardening practices; some people love one way, and others wonder why the heck they do :) I never have all the beds ready, or I'm planting all my tomatoes, and doing all the other things folks do, so my planting-out stretches a long time. I think if you don't transplant poppies and larkspur while tiny, they get stunted from the pot. Sometimes what I manage to get out early rewards me with a lot of growth, but some of this year's seedlings should have been better-developed before I stuck them in the rough spot I put them in. I've definitely learned that once the pot is full of roots, those plants won't grow much until they get in the ground. And, it's easy to have an overgrown container dry out in the summer heat. Also, I have planted a lot of seedlings out in fall...and late fall...and that does not work well in my zone 5, even though it cools slowly because of the lake. The seedlings that have survived that are almost exclusively the ones that got a cold-frame of some sort. I lost a lot of nice seedlings last year :(

I have to get everything in the ground early before the weather is too hot. Most things just don't take well to transplanting in 90+ degrees. Karen

Not only am I still planting out...I'm still getting sprouts! Just this week my viola and pansy containers sprouted. Seems just weird since they are cool season, I thought they'd be one of the first to sprout. Oh well, I'll take 'em! |
