| I'm on the 5/4 border, and people are saying this summer is late. Coming from a much warmer climate, I certainly love gardening up here where the heat doesn't just kill you. But, I'm finding that sometimes it seems to take soooooo lonnnnnggggg for some WS annuals to ever begin blooming! My Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate, first year I've grown it, is still very small. I can't imagine it blooming anytime soon. Many of Rudbeckia hirta's survived the winter, and they look great, but the Rud seedlings I planted this year are so small, as well.
If you're in a cold Z5 or a Z4, what plants grown as annuals have you found just take too long in our colder climates to be worthwhile?
I know annual asters won't bloom till fall, as they are programmed to be like that. It's the "normal" annuals that I wish would hurry up! |

| Coleus were too slow even for me here in a much hotter area than yours. They did grow, but didn't look like much until fall. I suspect that some other heat lovers, like impatiens and begonias, might be the same. Never tried them though. Karen |

| Russian Sage, Lady's Mantle and Heuchera are perennials and if they are slow the first year, will come back the second. I think this year is not the year to go by how long anything is taking. I am finding lots of things are off schedule. It's been an odd year, weather wise. I even started peppers indoors this year and since putting them out, they are still just sitting there. |

| My impatiens are TINY still, and I'm in zone 6. I don't think I'll bother with those again.... |

| prairiemoon, that makes me feel better about the peppers. We started a huge veggie garden last year and found out by exceptionally POOR plant performance that the loam brought in was miserable. Bought 14 cu yds (yes, 14) of compost and some lime last fall. This year things are growing...a little. Just sent off a soil sample, so your comments give me hope until I get the results that maybe it's weather and not just soil. I'm wondering if I need to go by the guy who sold me loam and see if there's any chance chemicals or something could have gotten into the soil. I'm so discouarged! interesting that the Lady's Mantle has a slow first year. Will be WS them this year, so now at least I know not to expect much the first year of growth. |
