I have been babying one (apart from the two I whacked thanks to good advice here) that was in a cell pack from two winters ago!!!, watering it, waiting to see what it was. One I whacked was taller than me, and I'm about 5'7". Ha. Felt the leaves and felt and looked just like the one huge one. So I yanked it out, and it had a root the size of a baby potato. The leaves feel soft and almost satiny although there could be different varieties. Never had them before and been feeding birds for years, I had all my containers under the bird feeder (which I quit putting seeds in because of ice) so really I think mine came in with some seeds I planted. If you want to see a picture of how big they can get, find my recent thread still on the front page asking for an ID. What if it turns out that dang weed is a cure for some horrible disease? I read it was used as a medicinal for something.

I'm with pokeweed. get ripping. Poison ivy is three lanced leaves - once you see it, you won't forget it.

Aliska, Pokeweed is used for herbal poultices. "Back to Eden" book. I take 'Dandelion root' capsules to keep my kidney's cleansed. But, the Pokewood is gone. The Amaranthus weed keeps coming back everyday.

Poultices aren't too bad to experiment with but my pokeweed(s) is history. I'd be a little afraid to take Dandelion root capsules if they affect the kidneys. I sure have some nice specimens I could contribute to the cause though. There are different kinds of Amaranthus. The two I tried didn't germinate, may try them again. One was pretty fall colors of foliage, and the other was with those red chains hanging down. When my son (in his 40's) saw a photo of it, it creeped him out.
