I have soem penstemon, etc that WS seems right for. Can I just direct sow this where I want them for plants next yr? Do you have to use containers for winter sowing? Is it to early to sow them?

You can try direct sowing, but that is not wintersowing. It's apples and oranges.

Wintersowing involves sowing outdoors in a covered vented container with drain holes. If you haven't seen the FAQs, I'll give you a link.

Welcome to the forum.

You can direct sow, but don't let the birds see you do it! They just love a nice, fresh buffet table!

I dont know if the birds will find room at the table with all the deer, and japanese beetles I am feeding now,lol

It's all in the semantics. WS in the context of this forum means sowing in containers during the winter months, still not sure about best timing or if it even matters that much so long as your containers are well drained and soil is right. I read to scatter grass seed over the snow in late winter or early March.

That's what I thought it meant when I discovered this forum, scattering on the ground or snow in winter, until I read some posts and the FAQ's.

Actually I've been meaning to try scattering certain seeds in winter in the garden where I want them and see what happens. The birds may not bother some of the smaller seeds, guess I'll find out.

Actually, since I always have so much trouble transplanting WSed poppies (they never stay alive till the ground is workable), I'm going to try a sort of hybrid DS/WS. I saw a post from donn where he pushes a milk bottle top half into the soil in a pot and then takes it away and sows the seeds into the space marked by the plastic, then puts the top half back on.

I'm thinking of doing that, but directly into the soil. Make an impression in the soil with a milk bottle top half, then sow the poppy seeds onto that spot, and cover again with the milk jug top until the spring when the seeds sprout.

I'm sure the neighbors will think I'm off my rocker, but then, they're right!

Tammy, I don't know about the penstemon, but I've winter sowed it the regular way with great success.

dawiff, that sounds like a fantastic idea. They are protective from birds, yet I wouldnt have to worry about them having the right amount of water. I may try that as well.

I have thrown poppy and larkspur seed right on top of a February snow and they germinated and grew just fine in early spring. This is even easier than the slitted pot method regarding these two flowers at least.

I direct sowed a trade packet of bolero marigolds this year--I had planted two tomatoes into a small bed and just scratched in all the marigold seeds. This area is not without protection--it's been hoed and weeded already a few times, so the soil was already practically weed free, and it's got some wire wicket fencing surrounding the area which keeps the dog out off the soil.

If you've prepared some ground and partitioned it to keep pets and people out you have an advantage over sowing into unprotected and weed-bearing soil. My marigolds had staggered germination but I got almost two dozen from about 40 or 50 seeds. As the sprouts got their first true leaves I transplanted them around the tomato garden.

Seriously, if you're going to direct sow penstemon--which you can summer sow in containers--then first find seedling photos of the penstemon, print the photos and tape them to your wall because they have micro sprouts--penstemons have very tiny seeds. Knowing what the sprouts will look like will help you in identifying the seedlings once they begin to germinate.

Thanks trudi, I hadnt thought about that very good reason to do them in containers. My beds arent exactly weed free, and I have pulled seedlings before thinking they were weeds.
