I'm so excited, I ordered tree seeds this year to give it a whirl wintersowing them. Well this week I am finally seeing a couple of sprouts. Two red maples and two tamarack. Still a lot of containers with no sprouts, but plenty of time on those. WAHOOO!

Congrats, Dirtbert! I am too impatient for trees, mostly - even waiting for some shrubs is getting on my nerves - sigh - perhaps the curse of old age? But I am so impressed with those who cultivate them - we had a high school aged Boy Scout on the forum for awhile who was really into growing trees from seed. And there is an octogenarian in Martha's Vineyard whose property includes many mature trees she has grown from seed. What a gift to us all!

Whooo hooo, Congrats!! I know your excitement, I found that my paw paw (asmina tribola) has germinated the other day. I plan to plant it at my parents. I have a perfect spot for it picked out!!

Drippy believe it or not I am having better luck with trees than I am shrubs. I don't know if you consider false blue indigo a shrub but that is the closest to a shrub I have had germinate.

In the next few days I plan to collect some red japanese maple seeds. Would you like to try some??

I take that back, I did manage to get 1 golden currant to germinate, 1 lycium chinense to survive and a few red currants. Funny thing is that if you can't eat it, it didn't germinate for me besides the indigo!! Which suits me,lol!!

CC, thanks for the offer - I have a Japanese maple already - plus, as I said, I am getting tired of working with long germinators - I may buy a few clematis (and others).

RE: ws trees!

I ws'd red bud, rose of sharon, northern catalpa, two types of arborvitae, and sequoia and have at least a few sprouts of all of them. I am going to try more trees and shrubs this fall. I plan to plant the catalpas in my large dog fenced in area for some shade. They will grow fast and provide shade quickly and if they get killed, I'm not really going to be that upset. I'll have to put some kind of little cages on them to discourage the dogs from peeing on them and tearing them out of the ground.
