omg!!!!!

Posted by bakemom z6 Central Ohio (My Page) on

I have been at home sick for two days due to my diabetes and intolerance to meds. No problem, this will pass.

However, my 17 year old daughter was playing basketball in the driveway (yes, I paid 12k for pavers) and some woman stopped her and told her to tell her mother to cut back the flowers from the walkway. She was on her cell phone and yapping away.

Irony, I took pictures this week of that bed and others to post. It's beautiful. There was another couple coming down the street and the complainer spoke with them. They then walked by and said they loved my gardens. I think I know who it is and I will speak with her, but the sidewalks are not blocked (knautia) and she is just a crank.

This is just stupid. The gardens are an alternative to weeds and unmowed grass. ARGH.

I would love to see your flowers. I just don't understand
people that don't see the beauty of them.

Hope you feel better soon.

RE: omg!!!!!

Hah! How dare she!
Tell her to go jump in the Ohio River!

Does your city encourage homeowners to plant on the parkway like the City of Chicago? I took over the parkway long before I learned that the city actually had campaigned for homeowners to plant on the curbside. Nobody has ever told me to remove my plants from the parkway or my property. If so, I would say phooey anyway.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I've seen your pictures before, they are amazing!
I'd love to see a picture of HER property.
She must be a really dumb b....!

Mary

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Could you plant something with big thorns? In a planter with wheels & a remote control so that when she walks by you could ram her?!! Maybe chase her down the sidewalk? Love the mental picture...

Debby

 o
RE: omg!!!!!2

Ya know, we probably should pray for her conversion to gardening. If we all send her blessings perhaps the positive energy will inspire her to plant her own hell-strip.

RE: omg!!!!!

Oh Bakemom, I'm sorry you have to tolerate such nonsense when you have more important things to deal with! My goodness how sad, to be unable to see the beauty in nature and the artistic nature of a garden! Seems such a pity...

Paula Deen once said "Well, if everybody sang the same note in the choir, there would be no harmony."

On the other hand... maybe she has allergies, along with her inability to play well with other? In that case I wish her many, many pollen filled days ahead! Ah Ahh AHCHOO!

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

It seems some people simply are not happy unless they are complaining. Or is it she is insanely jealous and just finding a way to lash out at you? Then there are those that just can't stand it when you outdo them, how sad is that?

Feel better, bakemom

That woman is a GROUCH! What nerve - I've seen pictures of your gorgeous flowers by the sidewalk - they are beautiful - she's jealous, that's all!

RE: omg!!!!!

I am one of those people who does not have grass even at sidewalk space next to the road. Worst part if village will ever want me to remove it I would not know what to do with it as it full of hostas which are growing...
what a neighbor... everybody has to have one of those....
send her an article about benefits of beautification an how much grass lawn is outdated fixture nowadays... ;)

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Bakemom, I hope you feel better quick!

Maybe she was having a low blood sugar reaction :)

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Could you plant something with big thorns?

I'll be sure to send Bakemom some seeds from my Hardy Orange this fall. Poncirus trifoliata.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I have seen your curbside gardens and they are beautiful - but we are all well aware that there are those among us who feel that if it's not about them - they ain't haven it ( as she demonstrated by talking on the phone while admonishing your daughter ) next year I would plant an outrageous combination of colors - just to make sure she doens't miss the show!

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

bakemom,

some people are born with this disorder that they have to complain about something all the time. i am with columbusgardener. plant as much and as bright as you can.

i have neighbour who i call "complaint master". he always has some problem with what i do in my garden. first he complained about bottles. i arranged those neatly in corner and hide a bit. then he complained that your seedlings cause problem with the lawn mowing. ok. i trimmed the grass around seedlings. now when everything is coming to bloom he says, you have too many plants for such a small place. it looks like a nursery. it does not go well with other apartments in community. then one day he said you can't put hanging basket. it may cause poles to fall down. it is looking out of place blah blah. i am sure next month he will come and say your house looks like florist shop.

I have a permit from the city and the bones of the garden were designed and installed by Oakland Nursery. I was looking at the beds this morning and have no idea what she was talking about. The sidewalk is not blocked at all and two people could pass through there.

I am dumbfounded.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

LOL, Chickenmom, I love that idea! Bakemom, just keep doing what you're doing. As long as you don't live in an HOA, you should be fine, and even if you do, this complainer is going to have a hard time getting any sympathy.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

She probably wasn't paying attention and ran into your flowers then wanted to cover her mistake by making it look like your fault. Cell phones can be distracting. Anyone who feels embarrassed enough to complain to a 17 year old isn't worth listening to anyway.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

.. Oh come on, bakemom - it's so simple... She's a "NUT CASE"!!!

I have had neighbors say stupid stuff too!! One told me my bushes looked unruly. I like my stuff more natural and I do not shape the bushes into a square or globe shape. I just trim any of the really long pieces to keep it a bit neat.

I just told her I like my bushes more natural and I think they are pretty that way. Last time she said something to me.

I would speak with the person if you know who it was. she should not have said that to your daughter. if she has a problem she should get her lazy butt out of the car and knock on the door and speak with you not your child. Very rude!

Karen

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Don't let the old bat get your goat! I am sure you flowers are beautiful, bet she has a brow thumb and is just jealous.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I agree totally with the others that some people just want to complain about anything. I heard a saying once, "You cant please all of the people all of the time, You can only please some of the people some of the time, So why not please yourself" I think some people are just happy at others misery, I call it an inferiority complex.

With todays economy no telling what people are batteling through, I notice the worse the economy gets the more people are just totally rude. No telling what is going on in that womans life you just happend to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It would be funny though to have sprinklers to come on as she was going by though, lol. I couldnt do it I would be tempted but no telling what she would do to your garden afterwards.

Anywho have a great day! The worse thing you could do is just act like she said nothing at all and just be merrily happy in your garden as she passes while ignoring her.

Happy Regards, Carolyn

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I firmly believe in being "PREPARED" should someone's lunacy start to affect my mental health. She may just be a cranky person but sometimes those cranky people get a bee in their bonnet and go just a tad too far over the line.

So thinking rationally (as I sometimes manage), I would:

-go take digital pictures of the sidewalk from all angles right now (so that they're dated within 1-2 days after her comments were made)

-get out the measuring tape and measure the distance from curb to your property line (and/or where any flowers might hang over). Take pictures of the measurements too.

-get out my permit - review it and make an extra copy.

-keep it all in a file so if Ms. Panties in a Bunch makes more comments, you have all the ammo you need to shut her down.

Were it me - I'd probably also double check bylaws, etc to make sure she doesn't have a leg to stand on - even on tiptoe!

And when all is said and done, I'd plant something thorny (as already mentioned) or big, tall and busy (like fountain grass) to REALLY tick her off!

IRONY - IF this is the person I think it is, she planted thory roses years ago to keep the kids across the street from climbing over the cattycorner fence to visit their friends. She was pretty proud of that too. The kids hurt nothing. They have no children. She is also a member of a local garden club.

It sounds like someone needs a flameing bag of poop left on their door step.
On second thought, I don't think I would waste a good paper bag.

I wouldn't plant anything thorny. Why risk hurting all those other passersby who admire the garden and borders, for some loser?

RE: omg!!!!!

I think it looks great, not at all overbearing. The plants are low enough, it isn't like you have to push past them to get by. Not sure what her issue is - go figure.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Wow, and to think that there are millions of people on this planet with far worse problems than a few flowers hanging over the sidewalk......in some countries they might be eating those flowers because they have nothing else to eat, or using those flowers to hide behind so they don't become the target of a terrorist with a rifle......

Talk about majoring on the minor. Bakemom, let it go in one ear and out the other. Just let it slide off like water off a duck's back.

Thanks Columbusgardener! I will re-learn to post pics this summer. Most of the showy blooms like oriental poppies are done blooming, so the beds are mellow now. They are drought beds with clay. In fact, other than my approved plans for the bones, I just plunk stuff in and cross my fingers.

Folks, this is where your sea holly, gaillardia, knautia, bachelor buttons and amsonia seeds come from that have gone all over the country. Oh yes, this is where the mexican hats live as well.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

The woman is nutter....your walk looks lovely! And I can't wait to see my Mexican Hats! It's a pleasure to see the place they originated from.

Folks, the mexican hats that went out this year were from broyster and others. The hats from two years back were from this bed. All good.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Bakemom, I'm just getting ready to plant out my Amsonia from your seeds, and I have passed on some of those seeds to another gardener because you were so generous. I have enough plants to share with another neighbor who doesn't grow from seed, and also to ship to my DD in SC.

Thank you and many blessings to you.

Linda - lol.

Mary, that warms my heart. Thank you for that.

I went to Fresh Market today to pick up stuff for bruchetta (my 23 year old makes it) and my daughter was shooting hoops - I rolled down my window and told her to trim the g&*(da*() plants. She laughed.

What's funny is this is about 15% of my gardens, but it has been controversial.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I see from the pictures a very inviting friendly sidewalk that I would like to stroll down.

So your neighbor thinks a bare expanse of concrete edged with a boring lawn is nicer than your borders? How sad for her.

Tell her to go take a nice walk in a parking lot or on a tennis court if that's what she likes.

Maybe your pretty posies distract her from her important cell phone yacking. Can't have that!

The medium haired blue and white is Maggie who growled at this person (who I think it is) several months back.

See the green strip in the first two photos? I have a plan. Remember when the Germans were bombing Pearl Harbor? Forget it, she's on a roll.

I'm thinking about taking 5-6 feet out to match my front beds. Then we will see what happens. Remember, others in my hood have planted up their strips. What are we going to do with them? Bowl? Play football? Put lawn furniture on them?

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I think your garden looks pretty darn neat and tidy - and LUSH! I don't know why people have to be such boogers. I honestly think it could be a touch of jealousy...you know, that your yard might be earning more attnetion than hers! LOL*

Some people just don't get it. But you know what? It's your yard, and as long as you're not breaking any laws, then you should do whatever you want in your yard...and if the neighbors don't like it, they can MOVE! LOL*

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

You're "neighbor" sounds like a total twit! What a beautiful place to walk slowly and admire the beauty. Obviously it looks like a blurr to her as she zooms by talking on her phone..."stop and smell the roses"...OH, NO, I'm in too much of a hurry to get to the GARDEN CLUB!!!? Is she nuts! Probably does little bonsai bushes with white gloves and little gold scissors...hey, lady, get down and dirty like bakemon...a REAL gardener. Maybe you could approach the garden club about presenting a WS lesson...that would get her.

Seriously, just "pity the fool", she probably never WALKS by there anyway. Your garden is gorgeous and something to strive for. GO BAKEMOM!

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

Now see BakeMom, this woman needs your help. Obviously she isn't a gardner otherwise she wouldn't be so stressed. So she needs your assistance in seeing the light.

Sample conversation:

You: Hello my name is ......... I understand you came by the other day and spoke with my daughter.

Neighbor: Well yes I did. So she told you?

You: Yes, she was quite concerned about you. She was concerned about how stressed you sounded! I used to get stressed easily. But once I started gardening, I don't know it just helped so much. I learned to be patient with Mother Nature and combined with the excercise, it has just really helped my outlook on life and my stress level. Plus it's fun. You really should try it some time.

Neighbor: I'm sorry, I do garden.

You: Well, I know a lot of people raise a few flowers, but to get the full benefit, you really need to throw yourself into it.

Neighbor: Well! I do have a very large garden, and I am a member of XXXX Garden Club. I am a GARDNER!!!

You: Well, evidently the club may be giving you some bad advice. Gardening shouldn't stress you out like that! Gardening should help you to relieve stress and relax. Really if you relax and just enjoy it you will find it so beneficial. And with a reduced stress level, you will find that you are in a better mood more often! Come by sometime and I will try to show you how gardening should be done.

If this woman is who I think she is, she has called the police and city on just about everyone. I didn't see her for months and then one evening, she came walking down the streeet and told me her dog had died and how sad she was. I thought perhaps she wasn't so bad after all. Now, she's not minding her own business and ordering my child around.

Good thing I have in-house counsel - lol.

 o
RE: omg!!!!!

I disagree...do NOT let this lady in your beautiful garden. I have this vision of every flower she touches shriveling and cowering from her fingers. Ignore her...isn't that what we were told as kids to do with bully's. Dog probably died of fright! She sounds like someone who really things other people truly care what goes on in her life...problem is...she needs to GET a life!

Don't do anything to change that beautiful garden!

UPDATE: Woman with cell phone yapping walked by again. No comment this time, but it is not the crab I thought it was. My daughter doesn't have a good description of her, but the woman didn't say anything yesterday and was busy with her phone.

I have cut back my spent Knautia and Persian Cornflower. Maybe that pleased her. I am totally puzzled.

I love what you have done there Bakemom. And the cat is really nice looking as well. I would just bet she would have a stroke if she ever went to Galloway Gardens. LOL Just keep doing what you are doing and don't let that pessimist with the crab apple face deter you. She needs to see the beauty in the world that God created for us all to enjoy, not b!tch about.
