Yes, Lesa, you can plant now. As a matter of fact there are several things that I plant now including hollyhocks because I do not have space for them 'doing nothing' over a whole summer. I usually sink the pots in the ground over the winter and plant them out in spring. Others I am growing now are lupines, and dianthus barbatus. I will plant them out in the fall. I am not sure about the Monarda though as I have only winter-sown them. You may want to check to see if anyone has started them indoors.

Lesa - I'm so glad you asked this question. I summer sowed Shasta daisy & helenium yesterday plus Cupid's dart last week. I set the milk jugs in the shade on my breezeway. The Shasta daisy seeds already sprouted so I'm pretty excited about those--I got very little germination from the ones I winter sowed. I'd like to start more dianthus barbatus too so I get flowers next year.

northerner_on - thanks for the info on hollyhocks. Mine that I WS last year & wintered over in a pot in the ground is blooming but I just have the one plant. I have seeds from last year's blooms I could sow now too. Yippee!!

I do a lot of summer sowing, but mostly annuals: zinnia, mexican sunflower, moss rose.

I did collect seed from a very short perennial Lynchis today. Like rose campoin but pale pink flowers and petite size (maybe 10"). Liked it so much (no I can remember if I gre it or bought it..) that I decided to summer sow the seeds right away. I've got all my jugs put away for the season. I summer sow in "topless" plastic cookie boxes from BJ"s. I hope they germinate!
