Seeds

As I prepare for the upcoming fall sowing, I'm looking for an online source to find bulk quantities of seeds, mostly wildflower and native varieties. I have a large area I want to turn into a "meadow" type garden. Anyone got any sources?

I'd like to purchase by the 1/4 or 1/2 pound if possible, so no tiny seed packs will do. Thanks.

Wildseed Farms sells in those kinds of packets, but I'll let you know now that I had poor germination from them this year from several different kinds of seeds...in case it matters, or you want to file that on the back burner.

There are many sources if you google "bulk wildflower seed," and then you could check that list out at the Garden Watchdog to find the most reputable.

Here's a thread from someone else's search for the same thing last year

Apparently Johnny's & Stokes are favorites

RE: Seeds

I have a few catalogs that have seed by the pound for sale.
You could take a look at their site. I mostly use these for a reference of where I want to place my plants.
I sure someone else will have more information.
PrairieMoon.com
PrairieNursery.com
wildseedfarms.com

Hope that helps a little.

Hi Tom,

I need your help about wildflowers and natives. When you say wildflowers, are they invasive?

I see tons of huge ponds in different communities here and I noticed that most of the borders have tons of different flowering plants. Most I see looks like blackeyed susan, purple coneflower and something that looks like a joe pye weed flower. Can those be considered wildflowers?

Thanks!

Environmental Seed Producers offers regional mixes in 1lb quantities.

Here is a link that might be useful: wildflower seed mixes

just noticed they don't sell to home gardeners. sorry!

RE: Seeds

I have a link on my blog to help you identify native plants for your area (sidebar link list). Then you could search on variety for suppliers.

Token, how are you planning on doing this? Are you going to prepare the soil or just throw the seed out? I would like to introduce more wildflowers to the field around my yard but I don't know how.

I experimented with a bed this spring. I raked the ground, tossed out some composted leaves, and spread zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds. None of my marigolds germinated, which after such poor rates with wintersowing, I realized I had mules. The rest came on strong and are blooming like crazy. I mulched very lightly with wheat straw. This was done sometime in April.

May 10.

Today.

What I want to do is transform the gully into a self-sowing wildflower garden. I tried with coreopsis this year, but nothing came up. I think the birds got them all. I'll wintersow a lot of seeds to plant down there and hopefully those will be in addition to any direct sown seeds.

RE: Seeds

Use Wildseed Farms. They have many specific mixes to choose from.

V1rtu...any wild plant has the capacity to reseed, however that doesn't mean it will be invasive. States have their own lists of invasive plants so it's easy for anyone to check them and limit what they grow and allow to go to seed.

So far, I like these two. Some repeats, but nice variation between the two. I'll probably get a sunflower collection as well. In the gully, I'm hoping to create a bird habitat and attract lots of goldfinches and cardinals.

Environmental seeds - Southeast

Wildseed farms - Southeast.

Sunflower collection

Thanks! I'll go through that other thread too. And the 1lb of zinnas, 48k seeds, is that enough? :)

I'm glad to see that others have had good experiences with Wildseed. Gives me reason to not take them off my list of companies completely. I'll probably try them again, then.

Proud gm, Wildseed Farms has an excellent FAQ section with instructions on how to create a wildflower meadow. I've put the link to it below. At the bottom of the page there is a link to Return to FAQ, which has answers to lots of other questions.

I've used Wildseed Farms in the past and have never had noticeable problems with germination. In addition on the website, they have lots of seedling photos to help with id. They are also one of the few places where you can buy seeds for Laura Bush petunias.

RE: Seeds

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll add that to my list of things I need to do. The field seems to vary from year to year with what types of wildflowers it has growing in it. Last year it was ironweed, grey coneflower, Illinois bundleweed, and soldago, (?). This year it appears to be nothing but some type of white aster that has bunches of small white daisy looking flowers. I have no idea why it varies from year to year.

I've not done a wildflower garden per se but..

Have had good results with cheapseeds.com. I've only bought their "small" packs- like 7,700 gloriosa daisies seeds for $3. With free shipping, hard to beat. I had good results with their seeds.

I've bought Laura Bush petunias from Wildseed farms, probably others but don't remember what. The LB petunias reseed like crazy, highly recommended.

token,
environmental seeds, a wholesale only company, recommends that home gardeners use the retail company Outside Pride (who's 1lb prices are cheaper anyway).

Hazzards greenhouse is another that sells larger quantities. Don't know about mixes, but if you are looking for something specific, they have a large selection.
