My babies are back!

My praying mantids are hatched and venturing out. I found my first baby yesterday. It was a light brown and about an inch long. I will try to get pictures as more appear.

I hope the monarchs finish their business before the mantids start hunting in the asclepias.

What bugs do YOU raise?

We are more in the exterminating business here, LOL! My son has two pet Fire Bellied Toads and a Salamander, so we catch crickets, grasshoppers, moths, slugs and worms to feed them. I make sure the kids leave the praying mantids and ladybugs alone though : )

When my son was young, he loved bugs and we raised praying mantis in an dry aquarium. However, very often it was me cathing moths at night by the backdoor light. Hint: although praying mantis will only eat live bugs, if you have a dead bug and wave it in front of him, he will go for it. This worked great for dead flies. Amazing what a mother will do for her child.

I don't raise any bugs. However, it does peak my interest. (Maybe Luna Moths?)

I think I read at one time a praying mantis will eat a humming bird,we saw a bull frog jump after one a couple of days ago.( a humming bird, not a mantis )

Hi, Martha. My post was misleading- the photos are mine, but the video is is one I found on YouTube, not mine.

I have raised Monarch and Black Swallowtail butterflies. This year I've already got two Monarchs in chrysalises, and hope to raise many more. I would like to try other butterflies as well. Perhaps Spicebush Swallowtails? There is some Sassafras in the woodland across the street (one of their host plants).

Don't raise any other bugs intentionally, but my yard is organic, very natural especially in the back, with lots of native plants. This encourages a healthy balance of insects, and provides lots of food for the birds.
