| A few years ago, I received a package of Browallia (Amethest Flower) in a round robin swap. I'd never heard of it and gave it a shot.
Love it.Large, airy masses of long-blooming and stunning blue flowers that likes it almost anywhere but beating hot sun or completely dark shade. When it blooms this year I'll take some picutres. I save seed every year (easy) and always start a ton of it in the spring. I was out in the garden popping pots here and there today and thinking about....what other annuals work this hard and are as carefree? Mellies come to mind. Not Zinnia for me (lots of cutting and deadheading) What other annuals are easy to live with and are earning their keep in your yard? Nancy |

| I cut a lot of my annuals, so I don't take the cutting and deadheading into account in this listing - it's not work for me necessarily, its bouquets! :) Right now, hands down, its rudbeckia. I have several different kinds and many have self-sown and are the stars of the garden at the moment. As they usually are every year, but this year seem even better. I also love marigolds, and feverfew, which self-seeds - as a matter of fact I have it on my to-do list to not let QUITE so much of it go to seed this year! I do like zinnias. Never used to, but now I love them. This year in particular, larkspur is really putting on a show. I've never had good luck with this. Oh, it always germinated well for me via WSing, but I guess I always neglected it, or planted out too late, etc. This year I have a fairly large patch of it which must have self-sown from last year, and it is tall (5 feet), strong, and gorgeous! And, coincidentally, growing in amongst all the self-sown rudbeckias, so it is quite a show! Dee |

| A 5 ft tall Larkspur patch! I am so jealous! I've tried for years to grow those fabulous blue ones that i've seen picutred here (Vera? Karen? Soembody had a great patch.) But I seem to have a black th8nmb with them. I agree with the rudbeckia - but I feel like mine is perennial, not annual. Unless it is just reeeding like crazy (it does do that, I find it everywhere) OK, what do others say.......... |

| Sorry for all the typos! I am such a terrible terrible typist. I wish there was spell check on GW! |

| I am a mulcher and a deadheader, so almost nothing reseeds in my garden on it's own. But I do love and try to use many petunias, cosmos, zinnias, nicotianas and chinese asters in my garden. And verbena bonariensis. |

| Nan, I was pleasantly surprised by the larkspur - by the size of it especially, and by the amount that reseeded, because mine have always been rather short and pathetic. I think what I grew was Giant Imperial, in looking back at my records. I also WSed some seeds from pitimpinai (sp?) that were just blue, and the majority of my larkspur are blue, so it may have been from her, but there are a few pink ones in there also. And lastly, I had tried Cannes Mix, but had such poor results with it (again, my fault, not the poor flowers!) that I don't think these reseeders are that. But what a gorgeous blue color! I had given up on these (didn't sow any this past winter) but after this year will definitely have to WS some this coming winter.... and will have to make sure I don't neglect the seedlings! Dee |
