Summer Sowing Gaillardia

I had forgotten how much fun summer sowing Gaillardia is. Those shuttlecocks love the hot temps and thrive in Miracle Gro containers. They love it even more when I transplant them to my drought beds.

I sowed fresh seed 2 days ago and found 4 sprouts today. They look tough and healthy. They are babies from my wintersown plants which makes success that more exciting.

Are YOU summer sowing fresh drought babies?

p.s. I can't wait for the sea holly seeds to mature!

I sowed some seed from my yellow gaillardia on 7/16 - nothing yet. You got sprouts in two days?! Maybe my seeds weren't really ripe, or maybe they're sterile ... ?

A sea holly question - my plants survived from last year, but they **have not grown at all** this season. They actually seems to be dying out, sort of. What did I do wrong? Can I sow some non-fresh seed now?

PV (who's having a very so-so gardening year)

I only had one sea holly come back this year - I blamed the snow, ice and road salt, but I really think the cold wet spring was the icing on the cake.

For what it's worth, my golden gaillardia always sprouted later and with fewer sprouts. I lost all of those too this winter.

hmmmmm.

I summer sowed some yellow gaillardia a few days ago and they're sprouting! I have a dirty little secret with those seeds. ;) Also, I noticed some more of my other seeds I winter sowed that didn't sprout in the spring are beginning to sprout now, or at least I think they are and aren't weeds! LOL! Three out of four Paw Paw seeds sprouted. Hopefully number four will, and I'll have 100% germination on those, if not, 75% isn't bad.

I summer sowed gaillardia 'Burgundy' (commercial seed) a week or two ago and they sprouted very quickly. They've already developed their first true leaves. I'm guessing they'll be big enough to pot up/plant out in a couple more weeks. Looks like I got very high germination too. The balloon flower seeds I summer sowed sprouted in 3 days! I check all my SS jugs every day and was surprised to see sprouts in that one so quickly.
