| Out in the back yard today I found this growing right by the foundation.
Is in just about full sun, have never seen anything like it before and found no others like it. Fran |

| Looks like Chinese Aster..an annual. |
|
| I was thinking the same thing, that it could be a Chinese aster. However, I should add that I have a weed that delights in tormenting me every single year because it looks like a Chinese aster! So I sit and stare at these darn things and try to figure out if it's aster or weed. And unfortunately, I can't tell with yours either! Sorry! Have you ever grown asters? Could it be a reseeder? I'm thinking you haven't if you don't recognize the leaves, so perhaps that narrows it down to weed... Dee |

| I've neve grown any asters before, so it's not a reseed, and have had none left over or anything from my annual spring plant swap either. I posted this on the "name that plant" forum as well and 2 posts suggested Erigeron Fleabane as a possibility. I think I'm just going to leave this seedling all alone and see what blooms, if anything. At least that way I'll have a better idea of what it is and if I like it, will keep it and collect seeds, if not, well, just as easy to give it a yank and toss it or dig it up and find a new home for it in someone else's gardens. Thanks for the help. Will post again with a pic of the blooms. Fran |

| It looks like an aster? |
|
| Ah, Jaynine, this could indeed be the villain that vexes and perplexes me every spring when I try to decide if what I'm looking at is an aster! And I do have those blooms around the yard, so I'm sure many of the little plants I'm seeing is exactly that. Gosh it's hard for me to tell the difference between the asters and that thing! Ladyrose, are you suggesting also that it looks like an aster? Or are you asking more like "Really? you think it looks like an aster?" If the second, lol, yes, the first few leaves of a chinese aster (callistephis (sp?) chinensis) looks very similar to what Jaynine posted. I tried to find a good pic of a CA seedling, but it was hard to do. I'm putting in a link to a thread here at GW, and if you scroll (way) down to the post from Sun, Feb 21, 10 at 3:22 (about 2/3 down) there is a fairly close-up photo where you can see the leaves. The thread is long, but luckily has some nice pictures to look at while you are scrolling! Dee |
Here is a link that might be useful: thread from GW with a photo of a chinese aster seedling
