Saving Pea Seeds

How long does one want to leave the pod on the vine if you are saving them for seeds for next year. I have lots that are to mature to eat but not sure how long I can leave them, cause I do not want them to split out of the shell.

Also, these are Green Arrow Pea's. If I save them will they be true Gr. Arrow or is that a hybrid?
Thanks

Hi Connie,

The pods will turn 'paper-bag brown', you'll see the stem attached to the pod turn the same color. The pods themselves will become very brittle and when you press on their seam the pod may have some shattering or flaking. The seeds should easily roll out of the pod. After you remove them from the pods they need to be plated and placed in a safe location to further dry--I like to stash plates of drying seeds atop books in the bookshelves because I have cats, and a paper-plate seems to be a cat magnet, atop the books a cat can't fit in that space to lay on the plates. Let the plates dry for at least two weeks, longer if you have rain or high humidity. Afterwards, store in a paper bag.

Thanks Trudi
I will wait a little longer before gathering them.

RE: Saving Pea Seeds

Connie, per one of the experts around here, peas always come true from seed. I wish I could find you the link to the conversation where I found that out. It was one of the people on this forum that knows a lot, and doesn't say what he doesn't know. Good combination in my book!
