Just came home with several of the large bags of potting soil from costco. Now I am wondering if I purchased the right kind for winter sowing. It says on bag moisture control potting mix. Anyone else use the costco mix and does it work for winter sowing. I can return the bags if I purchased the wrong stuff. Thanks so much.

Brand? Although I'm not sure it really matters, most of the things Costco sells are of fairly good quality. Different Costcos stock slightly different products. I think the one I'm seeing in Costco near here just now is Miracle Gro, may or may not have moisture control. It's not a product I buy myself in this rain soaked, no need to watch moisture levels part of the country. It's not the best, and not the worst, plenty of people use it for winter sowing. If you managed to get it into a cart, then out of the cart and into your car, and the price was right - if I were you I'd use it. :) No kidding, I can't remember now what I bought that I almost left in the parking lot there. It was something I'd dragged off a stack and into the cart, then got outside and fought myself into a sweat trying to get it past the cart sides and into the back of my Explorer. No one around, like someone young and muscular, to flag down, wink at and ask to help :) There are just a very few brands of potting soil really unacceptable - I'll name one, Hyponex. If it says on the bag its a product meant for growing plants in pots/containers, and not top soil or not garden soil, I think it will be fine for your needs.

lol I also have that problem especially when I purchase the cat litter from costco. It is so heavy I can barely get it into the cart not to mention pulling it out of cart to put it into the car. I understand your comment very well. funny! Yes the potting soil is miracle grow. I bought several bags so wanted to make sure it was the right stuff. Sounds like it might be. Thanks

Mary, one of our local nurseries here mixes and bags potting soil from the Cornell 'recipe', tweaking it a little for our wet - and with the Pro-Mix that gets such great reviews not available in this part of the state, I've been buying that one the last several years. Who knew shopping could be such a physical workout :) - as in Costco trips. Again, lots of sowers here use the Miracle Gro.

Yep. Miracle Grow has served me well for many years, including the moisture control variety. Martha
