coreopsis seeds

I have been collecting coreopsis seeds for winter sowing. However I thought I better run this by you folks. I notice how well this plant self seeds. Actually this new plants are much nicer than the older ones so I may jerk out the plants after they sprinkle seeds and go with new ones next year. The question I have is I have an area where I would love more of this plant. Would it be best to winter sow the seeds or just sprinkle in the area where I want them to grow? If I sprinkle would you suggest doing this in the fall or early spring. Thanks so much.

RE: coreopsis seeds

If you have enough seed, I would do both. Sprinkle and winter sow. That way, you have the advantage of some seedlings without any transplant shock (direct sown) and the reassurance of having winter sown seedlings that you can plant exactly where you want them if the critters or erosion carry the other seeds away. I would direct sow in the fall, or even right now, since now is when the plants are dropping seeds. They might even germinate this summer and get some growth on before the snow flies so they'd have a head start next year.

Good luck!

Martha
