Newbie!

New here and super excited! I think I'm going to give this a go. We got a new house this year and I'm looking for affordable ways to stock up on plants. I bought a bluestar amsonia this year that I love so I might get some seeds on eBay to try. I'd love to join the group and learn!! I've read the instructions and I "think" I can do it! Much better than paying $10+ for a plant.

I'm in the Chicago area so I'd love some other suggestions to try. Thanks!

Growing from seed is the boss! Trudi's winter-sowing technique is a great way to start growing from seed because it is nearly fool-proof. You can certainly do it, and will probably end up with more seedlings than you know what to do with.

You can get seeds for the cost of postage by getting a newbie pack of seeds from Bakemom, and check out the Seed Exchange forum because there are always people sharing seeds for SASBE/BEAP.

(SASBE - self addressed stamped bubble envelop, BEAP - bubble envelop and postage)

Welcome. Not only is this a great way to have a lot of plants without the expensive price, but you'll find you can start plants that your local nurseries have never even heard of.

But besides what you can sow yourself, check out some of the nifty Gardenweb forums plant swaps in the Chicago area. Meet nice people and take home plants and seeds too. You can read about atypical one on the thread I've linked here

Here is a link that might be useful: Chicagoland Annual Plant swap

RE: Newbie!

Welcome to Winter Sowing, Paigeag. I am sure you will enjoy your visits to this site. So many wonderful members who are very generous with their expertise and advice. And I would take Kimka's advice about getting your seeds. I am also a member of the Hot Pepper Forum and many members there have had bad experiences buying seeds on eBay. You often don't get what you have paid for and by the time you find it out, it's too late to catch the culprit. Good luck.
