Favorite Zinnia's for cutting

I'm trying to decide which seeds to order for next year for cutting zinnia's.
Do you buy new seed each year or sow your saved seed?
I know they can cross pollinate so does it make a big difference in how the flowers look?
I have a beautiful dark red blooming now, and a bright magenta that I think is Purple Prince from a trade.
I'd like to save seeds and grow these again next year provided they will look the same.
Normally I wintersow perennials in early January and Feburary. Do you ever start zinnia's that early?

I can't answer your questions from personal experience, but losts of people save seeds from their zinnias and enjoy the results. As far as how early to start zinnias, they prefer temps in the 70s or 80s and soil that has been warm for a while. Here in Michigan I don't even wintersow them until May. But, I could get a frost any time before Memorial day. Are you thinking of direct sowing? I collected seeds this year for the first time from my Purple Prince and Uproar Rose, which are nearly identical to my eye. I'm hoping for a large swath of purple along my entire road frontage next year. Good luck with yours!

I was thinking of wintersowing in maybe February and then putting in the ground maybe late March or early April.
If Uproar Rose and Purple Prince look a lot alike, then I think I'll just stick with Purple Prince, since Uproar Rose is more expensive and a hybrid.

I have saved seeds from the Profusion series for several years and they come true. For the taller types, I sow State Fair, I usually save the seeds, but have seldom used them because I can get fresh seeds from the dollar store at 33 cents. This year, I got a special offer from T&M (half price and no S&H) so I sprung for Zowie and Zahara which are quite pricey. I am up north so like Martha, I start mine in May along with my other tender annuals. You may want to save seeds anyway and see what happens. There is very popular thread on the Annuals Forum about growing zinnias, where gardeners have produced some beautiful specimens from saved seeds. You may want to have a look.
