what to sow direct in garden

I have a very large yard that is near a utility easement. I was thinking a meadow type garden would be suitable for the situation. What can I sow in the Fall for spring flowers and what is best to wait and direct sow in spring? I just moved to Charlotte from New England. So far for Fall I have hollyhock, lunaria and cleome. any thing else? maybe coneflowers or BESusans? Thanks in advance /Abi

Larkspur, poppies, bachelor buttons work well in fall. Kept moist after sowing, they'll sprout now and winter over as seedlings.

Any hardy annual should work now.

Hi Abi! Hope things are as well as can be in NC!

Definitely try the coneflowers and BES - I actually had planned on giving you a bunch of seedlings in spring before you moved. They self-sow wildly for me so they should be good for direct sowing.

Maybe lupines too. They seem to self-sow well for me and I think they are so beautiful. I have the blue/purple ones and I love them.

Of course, I'm thinking in CT terms, but I think these should work down in NC as well...?
