That wild deep purple flower in fields blooming right now?

What is this flower? It's about 4 feet tall with striking deep purple flowers. It's out in meadows around here in droves. They get huge and I was planning to get some seed from a friends's plant. HELP!

Karen, I think they are wild asters. They bloom here in droves too.

If you can take a picture the Name That Plant Forum will id it for you. 'Purple' means different things to different people.

Does anyone know if it's the same one that grows in the Southern states?
I used to have one that I got from a roadside ditch in Georgia. I loved it and would like to get another one.

I love Ironweed---but I've never been able to dig one up. They seem to grow in the hardest, rockiest soil around.
