Many trees, shrubs, things other than perennials can be (and are by lots of us) winter sown. But, hort.purdue.edu makes it sound as though your seeds won't do well if stored dry and held until winter. They have a short viability if allowed to dry.

The plant will grow from seed, but the seed must not be allowed to dry out (even for a short time). After removal from the fruit, place seed in a ziplock bag with a handful of moist sphagnum moss and refrigerate at 0-4ðC (32-40ðF) for 90-120 days. This stratification is performed naturally in the wild, and is less than the required chill factor for apples, for example. Germination can be expected in 7 weeks, or if planted in the (northern) Fall, around the following July/August. Before the shoot emerges, the seed will have sent down a 25cm (10âÂÂ) taproot. Asimina triloba needs a correspondingly deep seed pot.

Ty for the response and link. That explains why the seeds were sent in a moist towel and ziplock bag. !st time I have ever seen seed sent that way.

I had sowed some before. They are the type that need a warm-cold-warm stratification to sprout, so plant them now and set them outside and forget about them. Until spring.

And yeah, they don't like to dry out.
