| Today it's cloudy and rainy and a bit chilly. And I've started putting the garden to bed. Now I'm sad as can be. All my friendly plants will be sleeping and I'll be missing them. I brought in 3 tender perennials to put in front of the window in my apartment to help me keep hopeful.
Anyone else got these blues?

| This is soup weather. Make a pot of your favorite soup and get a loaf of artisonal bread, eat dinner by candlelight. You'll feel better soon. Autumn is here--enjoy the very best of it. T |

| The entree in the cafeteria at work today was beef stew with root vegetables. Man, did that hit the spot on a cold, damp, dreary, drizzly, autumn New England day. Do what Trudi said--make some soup and sip it from a thick mug. I have a recipe for no-knead onion dill bread if you're interested. It's a huge hit with my family every year. Makes a small round loaf. Do a little decorating for Halloween--put a bale of straw & a pumpkin or two where you'll see them whenever you go in or out. Ditto eating by candlelight. |

| I am so not ready for spring. I am finding one of the wonderful things about the seasons up here, despite the obvious wonderful things, is the fact that summer ends. I love winter. I have so much happening now, and my garden gives me great joy always. But now it gives me joy because it's time to fall asleep. Goodnight, garden! Sleep well! I'll be planning more for you later, so you can grow and change! i thought about joining a seed swap this week, but I won't be ready till December, I'm afraid. One of the things I'm getting ready for is a 6-week trip with my kids to visit my mom in Costa Rica. She's a missionary there, so it won't be a tourist-y trip, but rather a trip where we get out to visit the "real" people that live in less-than-great conditions. You see the authentic Costa Rica with her! I am very excited about seeing the native plants there, especially the orchids. And, we'll be back in time just for ski season. Woooooo! Go to sleep, little garden! |

| We are having late summer weather, warm, sunny & dry, and there is much to do before the garden sleeps, including planting bulbs for spring bloom. No time to miss spring, yet. |

| Have cooking up a big pot of soup planned for this weekend and would LOVE the bread recipe Gardenweed!Usually, Hubby makes bread when I make soup and he will do and actualy enjoy the whole drawn out process. But he is knee deep in the grape harvest here and will be working 3 long days this holiday weekend, so I'd love to surprise him with some warm bread and thick soup when he gets home. Please post it here or email it to me! Thank you! |

| I'm looking forward to winter too, not just because it's winter sowing time, but because we have a new puppy. Our darling dog Lizzy passed away this summer and we very much missed her antics. Now we have a precious little maniac running around the house destroying everything in her path. It's exciting and we wait patiently for her to expeience her "first snow". It's something to look forward too. T--who is eating lentil and spinach soup for breakfast. YUMMY! |

Victoria, Just think of how exciting waiting for Christmas can be or your birthday. That's the way I now look at Spring and WSing allows me the outlet to start "gardening" a whole lot earlier than before. Of course then I go overboard on WSing, but I guess we're creating beauty in our own ways with all of our plants. Don't be sad that it's autumn - be happy to it gives you a break to work on other things like making soup and baking bread or whatever brings you joy. This crazy bunch of WSers are wonderful people and we enjoy our addiction and like to spread it to our new friends! Cheers and here's looking for the "Green Wave" of sprouts come spring! Ann |

| I feel like I'm a long way off from pining for spring. It is going to be in the 70's, maybe even some 80's, for the next 10 days. Very unseasonably warm. With only two VERY light frost, my garden is still going strong. I would still like to get any perennial weeds that are lurking around and I am still moving plants around. And I would love to drive up to the beach during this warm spell - not to swim but just to enjoy nature. Still enjoying summer on the one hand, but on the other hand, decorating a hall for a fall square dance tomorrow night. I love fall ... crunching the leaves as I walk, the brilliant fall colors in the sunshine ... soups, stews and breads ... But come about Jan 15, after I finally have Christmas tucked away, I'll start looking for spring in a big way ... checking this forum daily ... planting my seeds ... watching for my bulbs to pop up...don't ya just love the seasons! |

| I love fall it is beautiful!! I love spring also and I am eager to get winter sowing. Though today I stepped outside and just took a look to see what all needs to be done to prepare for winter. I found this hiding away. Just one of many more to come!!

| Trudi, Sorry to hear about Lizzy. I'm sure she was quite special and you have great memories of her. :O) I know what you mean about the snow and a new pup. My gardening buddy Lab still acts as though it's new to her every year and all 80 pounds bounce around in that snow like a 6 pound rabbit!! As per the fall, it's planning time and I love it. I've just discovered a site that sells all sorts of Brunneras and so the Hostas are going to take a hike next spring - or at least most of them. I was successful in fending off the deers from considering them as salad until this month, but am enamored by Brunneras and their look so the planning has begun! |

| Thank you Tiffy, she was a great dog. I was amazed that I could weedwack and mow the back lawn today without the puppy making me nervous--she gave me lots of space and just had a ball barking at the lawn mower ;-) Dogs just love snow, so it's something to look forward to, but as it's autumn there soon will be leaves to rake into big piles for puppy fun. Autumn is one of my favorite times for transplanting--it's cool, there's less sun, I don't have to worry about leaf drop as the roots are the important thing. T |

Ilove fall, I am still planting out.Bought 6 trees yeaterday, and 4 Turtle Head at home depot.I am moving hosta around, and hoping I can transplant a few shrubs ( see my question posted )I will stay busy til snow falls. Then start to plan what I will WS.I will be going with more trees and shrubs I think. I am actually, pretty busy all the time, and love it. I am making a lamp shade for my son,and have an order for one when I finish his. cAROL |

| cAROL. Please tell me those turtlehead plants were marked down. You tell people on THIS forum you BOUGHT turtlehead plants at HD? Do you KNOW how EASY turtlehead is to WS? I WS seeds of 'Alba' this year (my first year ever to WS) and they bloomed despite the drought. I thought they were a shade plant but I'm learning they like more sun as well as moist soil. Let me know how yours do, okay? If I figure out how to harvest seeds, I'll be happy to share. |
RE: Ohhhhh, I'm lonesome for spring already

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww,Eileen!!!!!!!!!!!! They were $1.98,for a BIG PLANT.I;m sorry Are they really easy? I am taking it, yours are white?mine are pink, tell me ,when you learn,,how to harvest the seed, and we will make a trade. :0) cAROL |
RE: Ohhhhh, I'm lonesome for spring already

| Well, that's okay then since you got such a bargain! ;-) They really are easy. I got seeds for the white 'alba' from Hazzard's last year. My friend in Virginia who grows the pink one says the butterflies prefer the white variety. I'll be moving my WS plant to a sunnier spot soon. For some reason I had it in my head they needed part shade. That'll teach me not to check the garden watchdog or Google before planting! |

| Hmmmm...fall just officially started about 2 weeks ago. Fall is the 2nd busiest garden season after Spring. We had such a hot dry summer, with watering restrictions, that I did very little transplanting or planting. Most of the winter-sown seedlings and some perennials sat in containers or pots, because it was easier to water and keep them alive that way. It has cooled off and started to rain again, so I've been busy working on a couple new beds and started to move perennials. Also planting those winter-sown babies. Also have some shrubs and trees to move. Assorted yard work. Etc. So no I'm not missing spring, because there's lots of gardening to do. But I know how you feel, because winter is my least favorite season. Ask me again in another couple months... :-/ |
RE: Ohhhhh, I'm lonesome for spring already

| Fall, and maybe very early spring, is the only time for planting around here; otherwise, it's too hot. I got two new blueberry bushes and some garlic - after my teacher testing this weekend, planting is what I'll be up to. Still trying to figure out a permanent place for the herbs. I don't want them too far from the house (the vegetable garden is at the far end of the property), but too close won't work either - 12 ft around the house is dedicated to critter (mostly insect) control, so I don't plant anything edible there. It looks like I am going to have to create a garden a little further from the back door for the herbs. |

| I am with you terrene, I do not like cold weather. Even though I do not like cold weather I am eager to get things moved, finish cutting back and to continue try eradicating my chameleon plant that I wished I never planted. Talk about invasive, ugh. Our weather here is like a yo yo, last week it was nice and cool, this week it has been warm. Yesterday I had to even turn on my air for a little while. So when we get a few fall showers I will be out there with mud up to my elbows and loving every bit of it. |
