Cutting back

So my first year of Winter sowing I did 400 seed types.
Second year I did 200 and more direct sowing.
Third year is coming up and I'd like to do 100.

I am busy planting out and worried about how much I'm going to have to overwinter in pots.
I don't give away nearly as much as I expected either.
I collect way more seeds than I've ever had before too and I still have some trading to do yet.

Do you want to cut back your numbers? Why or why not? Can you control your urges?

I can't control myself!! Plain and simple, I need help!! I have made three trades today all big trades. I do not have room for everything I am going to be growing. In the back of my mind I am planning my sisters garden for her also, and I seriously will plant some of these plants at her house. I am absolutely crazy!! I am thinking I will plant it at her house then if I like it I will just take some of it back, LOL. I keep looking at seed sites trying to find a bargain. I keep looking at the exchange forum seeing if anyone new has posted anything. Oh my I got it bad, I guess I am trying to make up for skipping out last year.

RE: Cutting back

I'm figuring I should go for fifty perennials/annuals and fifty veg. next year.
Not sure how good I'm going to be about that. At least it's not container amounts. I'm talking types of seed. I also am doing lots more direct sowing so those don't count but do get planted. : )
I occaisionally think about starting an extra bed at my Mom's house because she has lots of room, but she has lots of her own flowers and I do pass on some every year to her. I'm also figuring I'll try cannas for fun and mail the extra's to my friend in texas where they are perennial and won't need to be overwintered.

RE: Cutting back

How ironic, I was just outside and I was checking my cannas and actually thinking about digging a lot of them up and planting some new things in their spot. I did notice that my yellow blooming green leaf short canna has a few seed pods on them.

I finally eradicated my red blooming purple variegated leaf tall ones out of a few areas that were maybe 2 feet by 4 feet it only took me all day to do that. So in other words be glad they are not hardy in your zone. Those suckers are horrible to get rid of. The spot now I need to work on is the about 25ft long and about 3 feet wide, ughhh.

I throw the tubers away, I can't pay people to take them around here. If you want some tubers I would be happy to send them to you for postage. Believe me I have a ton of both types I already mentioned.

RE: Cutting back

Cut back? Nope - if I don't get going, I'm going to run out of time to plant at least one of everything that grows. On the planet.

And yeah, I probably have all the necessary seeds.

RE: Cutting back

Countrycarolyn, I'd love tubers I am just afraid I won't be able to overwinter them properly. I've never tried anything but four o clocks last year and I fried those.

Drippy, you are my hero. : )

RE: Cutting back

Well, this is only my first year trying WS, but I'm finding it difficult to hold back. I think I have a skewed perception of just how many plants can fit in my yard! Maybe I'll be planting by the side of the road next spring....

 o
RE: Cutting back

I know my perception of my yard is off. I just plan on squeezing it in somehow someway, LOL. The perfect garden to me is an overstuffed flower bouquet. Well I am working on that!!

Floodthelast, I wished I knew how to tell you how to overwinter them. I am not great at overwintering things either. I tend to leave even my gladiolus in the ground every year, which is not suppose to be hardy here but yet it comes back.

I did do some research and I found that the red canna is Canna Black Knight if it is not that exact one it looks close to that one my leaves may be a little more purple though. The yellow one I haven't looked up yet.

I would offer seeds but I believe a frost moved in before they had a chance to fully mature. So I wouldn't take a chance on them to be honest.

RE: Cutting back

Serenea, having a back up plan for extra's is a good idea. It is also kind of shocking how many you can fit in a garden. They start out quite small and you get more plants than you realize sometimes. I keep some of mine in containers and just pot them up a few times till they are a little bigger then I give some away and plant the rest.

Countrycarolyn, are you likely to have any tubers left this spring? I'd love some then. I'm tempted to have you mail some to my friend in texas and pay you the postage. I'll have to chat with her first though. She has little ones and would need to be ready for that.

RE: Cutting back

Sure, I will still have more than I know what to do with in the spring. You just let me know.

In order to give you an idea of how many I have already tossed or given away. Cleaning those 2 areas approximately 16 sqft left me with enough to cover a full size truck bed not fill it but the entire bottom was covered and a lot were stacked.
Next bed we are looking at 75 sqft!! I think I have plenty for the entire wintersowing forum. LOL

RE: Cutting back

Countrycarolyn,
I would love some tubers of each! I'll email you about the postage. I just put them in a box in my basement to overwitner. I have tons of the orange I save that way until the Master Gardener show in January and then donate them to sell. I'm actuall going to try and overwinter some outside with a heavy layer of chopped leaves.

I leave my glads in the ground and they return each year!

Thanks,
Bev

RE: Cutting back

I emailed you bev just let me know what you think.

I was going to suggest leaving some in the ground just to see what happened. I know that they will sprout from the tiniest piece to the biggest, so it may work.

RE: Cutting back

Countrycarolyn i would love to try some of your cannas. I lost more than half my garden this past winter and didn't have many seeds to wintersow due to a roof leak in my closet. I will email my addy to you.

RE: Cutting back

Carolyn I have decided I'd like to send your canna's to my friend as an early Christmas present. I'll email you about postage and such.

RE: Cutting back

floodthelast,

Cannas are very easy to overwinter. My first try 2 years ago was a failure. Here is what I did. I dug them and cleaned them with water. I kept them in plastic trash bags with peat moss and placed them in the darkest part of my basement. Looked at them in April and they all turned black and mushy.

The next year I tried again. I dug them but didn't remove a lot of dirt. They were still wrapped with dirt. Put peatmoss then finally placed them in plastic trash bags. Looked at them in April, the trashed bags stood up it's as if a kid is trying to get out the bag. It was growing but all the leaves were light green due to absence of sunlight. Transplanted them all and they're blooming right now. :)

RE: Cutting back

Well I got your email floodthelast, and I got busy. Mokey I got yours also. This is 5 minutes of digging. I seriously believe the small box is plenty sufficient. Bev if you are still interested let me know. There is enough for all three of you here in this picture. The scissors are my heavy duty garden scissors that are approximately 6 to 7 inches long.

I want to cut back too. 1st year did tons of types. Second year (this season) Did lots of the same plant but still a lot of containers!

For 3rd year (2010/2011) winter sowing. I plan to sow just seeds I collected from my yellow gallardia and black eye susan plants. Plus the veggie garden just herbs and lots of tomatoes.

I guess I will never scale back. However, this year I created a new stuffed bed of flowers where it was once bare. Lots of foxglove, BES and others. I can't wait to see it next summer.

I think I have no clue how to scale back. I am addicited to collecting seeds and sowing them.

I need a 12 step program for seed sowing....

Karen

RE: Cutting back

When you find the 12 step program please let me know. I just found out there was a such thing as a climbing milkweed. I keep thinking how pretty it would be intertwined with my sweet peas. Ughhh now I have been on the hunt for the seeds.

RE: Cutting back

I am cutting way back on perennials as have scads of young seedlings in holding beds that need homes and will be redoing some of my beds next spring due to construction and just because I can. I have decided to limit myself to 10 jugs of perennials.

Have also set a limit of 20 jugs of annuals.

There will still be hours of enjoyment going through my seeds boxes trying to decide which to choose.

Hopefully I can hold myself to the 30 jugs which will be less than my first year of 40 jugs. After 5 years of hundreds of containers each year this will be a very relaxed ws season for me.

That doesn't stop my feelings of excitement when I see an enticing offer like Carolyn's tubers but I reign myself in and remember that I have ENOUGH!

RE: Cutting back

You are a marvel mnwsgal. I'm hoping I can hold myself to fifty types of flower seeds and fifty veggie.
It does help that many of my favorites are direct sowable. That way I don't have to count them or plant them out.
I get nervous and excited every time I start a seed trade. I'll have to start counting soon. I suppose I could just do sasbe since I have so many seeds to share.
