Has anyone tried to wintersow this? How well did it do, when did you start it? I love this plant, I bought one at the nursey this spring. In the fall it blooms like crazy, and I would love to ws some this year. Right know it's full of long purple-blue flowers, if I get no seeds before the frost kills it, can I get seeds by hanging it up in the garage, or should I clip some stems know? I also have a pineapple sage and was wonder the same thing about it. Thanks for all your help.

RE: Mexican Bush Sage

I have never gotten seeds on my Mexican bush sage. I have had it for 3 or 4 years, and this year, it is very small. I won't be surprised if it doesn't return next year. I would recommend taking some cuttings. Pineapple sage blooms so late that I have only gotten seeds from it once. I don't have one this year, as it didn't survive the winter - I doubt yours will, either, since you are zone 6. I bought mine at our local garden center. It was considered to be an herb. I bet you could root cuttings of this also, since salvias usually grow very well from cuttings.

Last year I bought a small blooming pineapple sage while on vacation and kept it growing inside so that I could collect seeds. I started the seeds inside this spring but even so it did not bloom before our frost and was a huge plant. This is one that I will not grow again as I can start hummingbird sage which blooms earlier and is loved by our hummingbirds and will sometimes self seed.

Neither is reliably cold hardy for me in the ground. Half my Pineapple sage plants returned. I have no chance of collecting seeds. We've got a frost in the forecast Sat/Sun nights. This is my first year growing the Salvia leucantha. It's not bloomed and I'm wondering if it will return next spring.
