Wow! Bet that stands out in the autumn flowerbeds! I WS for the first time this year and penstemon was one of the seed types I was gifted with as a newbie. They all grew into nice plants but no flowers until next year. Does Huskers Red set seed?

That is very pretty!! Definitely an eye catcher for this time of year.

Yes, mine set lots of seed.. Which is apparently quite happy in my garden judging by the little seedlings I found near the momma plant. I wish my foxglove would self sow like that.

That's beautiful. My Huskers Red did not get that colour, but I loved the long white plumes it produced this year, three years after being winter sown. It produced lots of seed, which took a very long time to ripen and the seed pods are very hard and difficult to open. They yield lots of quite tiny seeds. I would like to move my plants to a sunnier location, but have not been able to check the best time for their move. But there's always next year.

I love my Husker's Red, I winter sowed it over 3 years ago, think 4 but can't be sure. Anyway, it blooms in early summer in my garden and the humingbirds love it. Mine does not get red like the one above but it does turn a deep burgandy and looks awfully pretty in the early fall.

I put in gallon sized plants last year and they up and died. I think I might try to sow some seed and see if they do any better.

Wow, I didn't realize they get so red in autumn!

I'm planning to WS some Husker's Red this year too...hopefully they'll sprout OK and it'll be interesting to see if they turn that lovely red in the fall someday.

Thanks for sharing the photo!

I sowed some last summer. I only had a few seeds and got seven seedlings. They were a nice size when I planted them out in fall, but none survived winter.

This Penstemon looks great in the Spring garden (lovely white/pinkish flowers) and sets tons of seed. They ripened all summer for me last year and I harvested a ton of seed (warning: the dried seed pods smell like feet). Even with trying to get every seed, I still had planty self-sow to the point that I grew very little of the seed that I collected. If anyone needs this seed and is participating in the winterswoing swap, just let me know and I'll put in a packet with your name on it.

Nancy, I would love some if you have it. I'm watching my blue mist caryopteris to see when they are ready, and will put a packet in my winterswapping envie for you if you still need it.
