I Can Grow Anything But

It's time for this one again, now that we've had a chance to view the successes and failures of our 2010 gardens. I'll start:

I can grow anything but asclepias - waaah, I want monarchs! It germinates just fine for me, but everytime I put it in the ground up north it failed to thrive and then died, and ditto down here in the south - maybe even more so! And, and, and - it's NATIVE to the south, grows like a weed everywhere! Except in my garden! Waaah!

Here I invoke the favorite saying of Red Sox Nation: There's always next year. :)

its melons for me. I actually had a seed grow and have a vine, but, that was it. no fruit for me.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Lupine. This was my second attempt. It sprouted fine, but melted away to nothing after I planted it. Also, I can only get larkspur to flower if I leave it in the milk jug, LOL!

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I'm with you drippy.. any asclepias is my nemesis! I did actually get ONE seed to sprout this summer (out of 6 jugs) but then it withered away... Also Verbena Bonariensis... I have yet to ever have that one sprout! I dunno if it's been bad seed or what. And I would love both in my garden SO much!! I'll try try again this year! :)

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Babtisa germinates, grows in the container, gets planted out, looks ok as a small perennial in the garden that season (no flowers, but wouldn't expect them)then the next season....does not return. I've done this four times.

I seem to be able to get smallish larkspur and delphenium to germinate and flwoer a bit, but nothing like the ones I've seen here (fields of BLUE) and they rarely come back the next year. This year I did get some larger ones in a large container (half a wine barrel) to return with some robust foliage, but the didn't flower.

But thats the roll of the dice and I don't get too upset about it anymore. So much does so well there is limited room to plant anyhow. Perennials from pervious years are growing biger and bigger and taking up more real estate. I fill in with the easy annuals that I love - zinnia, mellies, nasties, tall argeratum - and it works out.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Obeident plant, the green ones died out and after several years I still have only one variegated plant, which is blooming today.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

My asclepias didn't do well either except for Asclepias currassavica. My WS Asclepias incarnatas did awfully. Many didn't germinate and only three seedlings grew through summer, not looking too healthy. Asclepias currassavica did well, but my bad soil gave it a light diet. Now that I know the soil is bad I hope to have nicer, fuller ones next year. Asclepias tuberosa had three seedlings survive, look fairly decent but not great.

My delphiniums did pretty poorly, too. One seedling survived, not looking too well.

All Papaver orientales died, too, both commercial and trades.

It would have helped if, early on in the WS experience, when I saw slugs in the jugs, I had done something other than say, "Gee, look at those slugs." I found out the next day what they were doing in the jugs. I guess you could say I've come a long way this past year.

 o
Poppies RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I'll add that my other poppies did pretty well. It was just the orientals that wouldn't survive.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Blue flax sprouted in the container but never did another thing, like grow bigger. I really wanted this one plus it was something new for me. I will try again also but it just surprises me when most everything else came up & grew like gangbusters.

Deanna - your mention of slugs in your jugs had me on red alert since I have a slug problem here but I only found 1 in a single jug, right where I would expect to see one and I speedily disposed of the intruder. Thanks for that warning but sorry you didn't realize sooner what the little $!#^@! were doing in your jugs!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Platycodon. I know it germinates easily for everyone else, but in 4 years I didn't get a sprout.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I can't grow melons too ;-(

This year I sowed a variety with lots of resistance to foliage and wilt problems and I thought they were looking really good, but NO! Not for me. The vines keeled over and in a week they were done. Now all I have are half-done melons in a tangle of scraggly, practically dead vines.

Sniff.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Karen - I have lots of balloon flower seeds if you want to try again. I have the regular blue, dwarf purple & single white. The blue are hands-down the most robust growers for me so far. I have a double white one that's just a couple of years old. I won't have enough seeds from that one to trade this year except for a couple folks who already called dibs on them. LMK

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Any flax, scarlet or blue. I can get both to germinate but after they sprout they get so high but never flower and they do not return. I plan to try again this year.

This will be my first year growing the asclepias from seed but I wonder if the root needs to be larger before transplant. Those roots are crazy large almost like a sideways tap, in other words instead of going straight down they tend to go left and right. I mention this cause before I knew what this was I had pulled and chunked some out of my garden and I thought I had it all. I be dog gone if it did not come back the next year. Then I found out what it was, so I said well I guess it can stay, lol. This year I bought more seeds of other colors also, lol.

 o
RE: oh and

I also can't even get orientalis poppy to germinate also. I am going to try again this year.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Hmmm ... I've had good germination on Asclepias tuberosa, but sometimes lose it after planting out. I didn't get any germination on Asclepias curassavica though.

A couple people mentioned flax. Grew Scarlet flax this year, and it did fine, though the color was too pink for my liking. Can't seem to grow the golden one, Linum flavum 'Compactum'. It will germinate, but dies either before being planted out, or after.

Geums are another one that germinates well, but never seems to survive long once planted out.

Wonder what the trick is to getting these particularly tender sprouts to survive until adulthood?

KMOTGG! Have tried time and time and time again - can't even get the seeds to germinate. Cleome, columbine and coneflowers used to be on my list of "no-can-do", but I got them licked, finally.

At this point, I'm not even sure I want to grow KMOTGG, but I refuse to be beaten by a SEED.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

countrycarolyn, be forwarned that asclepias germinate late. Last year I was watching all my new little sprouts grow and grow and grow...and there sat the no-green jugs of asclepias. They do germinate later, so be prepared to watch a pot boil, which is what I felt like I was doing.

It would be nice to know if the problem was the seed, and how much was traded vs. commercial. My traded Black-Eyed Susan vine was one of the very few plants with zero germination, but my purchased variety of BESV had very good germination. Wonder if I gave anybody dead seeds?

Oh, wait, I did! I traded New England Aster seeds with somebody, and also planted them myself. ZERO germination and I KNOW KNOW KNOW they were ripe on the plant when harvested. Turns out NEA's need another variety nearby to produce viable seed, kind of like apples. I still don't have another variety near this plant, so I won't trade those seeds this year!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Eileen, thanks so much for the kind offer, but I think I'll decline. I broke down and bought one last year. I survived to come back this year, but nothing to write home about. I'm going to wait until next year to see how it does.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Deanna I think it has happened to all of us. I know there is one person that I got coreopsis moonbeam seeds from and that variety is suppose to be sterile and I did not find this out till after the trade. I assume they didn't know either, but you better believe me I am still going to try and grow them, lol. For that just in case factor. I do not even remember who it was, that is how much I am worried about it.

Though I did read somewhere that the besv is also suppose to be sterile at least I think I read that in the seed saving forum somewhere.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I got some of those coreopsis seeds, too! I can't remember, either. I found out before I planted them, which was nice.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

My problem was winter sowing Oriental poppy. I only have one and this year I got my first bloom.

Photobucket

My blue flax is a perennial and blooms the second year for me.

My New England Asters yesterday.

Photobucket

I didn't know you needed another aster. The wild white asters grow outside of my property.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I can't remember the pots that I had to dump out BUT I did dump some zero germinators...

Pvick, I sent tomva the Var. kmotgg seeds that he posted pics of, would you like to try some of my seeds??? I grew them my first year and they reseed so badly that I rip out dozens and throw them away.

I have mine planted where it is sunny and very very damp soil. They were over 6 feet tall this year, maybe more cause they hang over. I ripped out all but one plant hoping to keep the reseeding down to a handful.

If you want to give mine a try drop me a line with your addy and I'll send you a fresh packet...

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I've yet to germinate 'Turtlehead'. My neighbor up at the lake, who I supply tons of plant babies to each year, bought me 2 nice sized plants late last summer that are in full bloom for me now. However, like others I refuse to be beat by a seed, so I will try wintersowing them again this winter for the 6th time!

I also can't grow a poppy to save my soul. I hope to remember to direct sow some this fall and/or early spring to see what happens!

I can grow an asclepias like nobodys business except for the orange. Besides them germinating slow, they return late each year too, so mark each transplant so you know where they are.

Oh yeah, KMOTGG is a failure for me too. Only once did I get a seedling, and never again.

Sandy

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Ok, excuse my ignorance here but what is KMOTGG???

 o
RE: nevermind

LOL, google is a powerful tool!!!

Kiss me over the garden gate.

Sorry, I guess next time I will use a search engine prior to asking and showing how ignorant I really am. LOL

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Drippy,

Send me an e-mail if you want some fresh Asclepias Incarnata seeds. I just collected some Soulmate and Ice Ballet - althoug the Ice Ballet may have done the bee thing. :O)

Bonnie,

My experience with Tuberosa is that it DOES sometimes go dormant in it's first year after transplanting but it comes back the next year. I had a few 'disappear' on me this year in a dryer area and when I dug the area up to plant something else I found all the little tubers still alive and well with tiny green growth below ground. Others, planted in a moister area with rich soil, did well all summer growing about a foot tall.

One which evaded me to the point that I bought two of them this summer (1 gallon) was Asclepias Speciosa. And, yes, it is our native milkweed!!!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Go figure on why something that grows almost weedlike everyplace else (locally) gives us such a hard time when we try to cultivate it.

Tiffy, thanks, I have lots of asclepias varieties. I've veered away from curassavica in the past as it's not hardy in the north, but I may do better with it down here. I still think syriaca is the native variety here, though - I have seeds for that too, but thanks for the offer!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I can't seem to grow Black Eyed Susans.. and not even the vine. The regular old plant, that grows like wild every where else, but my garden.
I've tried it from seed, I've tried purchased plants, I've tried buying them from local gardeners who have divided theirs.... all of them dry up and wither away on me and nobody seems to know why.
I get soooo jealous when I hear people say theirs reseed regularly and I can't even get the darn things to grow for one season.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Sandy,

I would be happy to send you some as well if you would like to try again.

RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Lupines -- and I love how they look. All of mine died after being put in bad soil (accidentally sterilized), but I pulled out a couple and put in potting soil so I could baby them and still they died, one right away, one more slowly. But it was so dry here this summer that one probably died from a few missed waterings. The other was dead within days of transplanting to the pot, though, so watering wasn't an issue.

Also broccoli and cauliflower. The plants grow and look healthy but form small useless heads, nothing like the heads shown on the seed packs.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

This is embarrassing - radishes.

I can't grow a radish to save my life! The tops grow fine, but no bulb - ever. It's a complete mystery how I can fail to grow one of the 'easiest' vegetables to grow!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

Lupines, no matter what variety, just don't germinate for me. And this is the first ear that aconitum and genetian have germinated at all and at that I got justa couple of plants.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

One more thing. Actually, I'm sure I'll think of many more things, but right now it's just one more thing. My snapdragons germinated, but nary a bud nor bloom from any of them. Just some foliage that on its own isn't too noticeable or noteworthy. What do they need, kisses and hugs and chocolate bon bons?!

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

dem_pa, regarding poppies, all I do is crush the seed pods on the area where I want them to grow. I do it around late October. I also do this to larkspur.

 o
RE: I Can Grow Anything But

I can't grow California Poppies - they will germinate and grow some leaves but then they stall and then die...Karyn1 thinks it's too hot and humid around DC for them to grow well.
