I have ws perennial salvia in March, April and May and had excellent germination with all. Salvia containers are filled with seedlings. Annual salvias are ws in April or started inside, not for better germination but for earlier bloom.

I just had to put my 2 cents in, Even though I am in a warmer zone. For my salvia blue bedder I started it here in March 3 years ago which I bought the seeds as a perennial. Wonderful cottage garden plant!! For my salvia victoria I started about the same time which is suppose to be an annual here. It comes back every year!! More of an accent plant. Each bloomed the same year though my victoria took off a little faster than the blue bedder. They both reseed and on wintersown.org I saw something where salvia can be winter sowed.

salvia darcyi

I recently bought salvia darcyi seeds which I think our annuals in my area.
sowing it

I've read that when sowing annual salvias, they have to be surface sowed. Do we just have to drop the seeds on the potting mix or do you press it lightly so that it gets good contact with the soil?

Neil, I usually sow Yvonne's salvia around late March or early April here in my zone 6. I did them inside under lights once, sown in mid or late February. They didn't bloom much sooner and didn't get any taller than WSown ones. I had poor results WSing last year, Yvonne's salvia got 3 sprouts out of 2 jugs. Nothing else did great, either. My Yvonne's salvia volunteers did much better than the WSown ones. Karen

Rope light bottom heat. I used it two years ago when I was just flirting with WSing. Now, the pieces have been tossed out of reconditioned for other uses. I don't start seeds inside anymore, not even tomatoes.
