Finding seed of Mexican sunflower

Posted by ellenr z6 NJ (My Page) on

Hi all,
I took some seed heads of my neighbor's Mexican Sunflower -
and I'm not sure what part is the seed.
In the seed head there are a lot of flat, oblong things about 1/4 inch long.
Then I come across some tiny black things.

I'm hoping the long oblong things are the seed packet cuz I got a lot more of those.

Anybody know?

Thanks,
ellen

Here's a pic. of what the seeds look like. Very similar to zinnias.

The seeds are inside the papery spikes. They look like a sunflower seed with spikes on the wide end. Very tricky to get out.

Ellenr, if you want some commercial seeds let me know.

I only used 3 seeds out of entire Tithonia 'Torch' packet.

Since deer and groundhogs pulled plants down from 24" container with 36" of additional rabbit fencing on top I won't be growing them again.

Kills me because they were a hit with bumble bees and Tiger Swallowtails. By the time animals had moved on to other plants and Tithonia bloomed it was too late for Monarchs & Black Swallowtails last year.

Email me with your address if you want some insurance and I'll send them to you. :)

Have seed of Mexican sunflower

When I went downstairs to check my seeds I also found a packet of regular Tithonia.

Welcome to some of either or both...anyone who wanta a few or enough for a hedge...LOL.

If no takers I can send to Bakemom if she's still doing newbie seed packages.

To anyone who wants to send me seeds, yes, I am sending my address to you. thanks!

Thanks for that photo - very clear - now I fear that i have not any seeds, cuz I have not seen anything that looks like that.

Perhaps I waited too long, and they blew away.
I sure did collect a lot of chaff tho! lol

Ellen, there's a great pic on - you know, that competing garden site which GardenWeb now BLOCKS!, the name of which you can't even mention. I can't link to it, but if you search their FILES you will find it. Apparently a little competition is a little too much. Guess you get sent to Disneyland for mentioning the name.

I tried to email you privately and give you the link but your email is blocked, too.

There is a pretty good picture on this post from the seed saving forum. This looks more like the seeds I get.

Becky

Here is a link that might be useful: tithonia seeds
