| This is the first year I planted a fall/winter garden -- it's soo easy. Depending on where you live, you need to protect plants in winter. In September, I bought a few cauliflower, savoy cabbage, kale, collards, Swiss chard, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage plants. They grew so fast - we've been feasting on the kale for 3 weeks, and sharing w people from work. So, I decided to try my luck with seeds. In late September, I planted seeds of Vates and Red Russian kale, Swiss chard, Bloomsdale Winter spinach, mizuna, and tatso mustard greens, and two 4' x 8' beds of lettuce. Also garlic for next year. We had a couple of cold nights so I covered lettuce beds with Reemay, and will probably cover the rest soon. The Reemay protects against wind and insects, and keeps the inside temps a little warmer. Next year, I will start 2-3 weeks earlier. Most of the seedlings are still fairly small and need a couple of weeks before they are big enough to harvest. |
