Fall Winter Growing in Jugs

Posted by mlcom z6NJ (My Page) on

Well, I am impatient. It is time to sow now. I am starting with lettuce and spinach in jugs. It is too easy not to have some nice winter greens so jugs are getting preped this week and planted for salads.

My garden has in it now kale, turnips garlic and some cabbage plants.

Hi ML - do you keep your greens right in the jugs or do you plant outside and cover? I want fresh greens too!! :)

This is the first year I planted a fall/winter garden -- it's soo easy. Depending on where you live, you need to protect plants in winter.

In September, I bought a few cauliflower, savoy cabbage, kale, collards, Swiss chard, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage plants. They grew so fast - we've been feasting on the kale for 3 weeks, and sharing w people from work.

So, I decided to try my luck with seeds. In late September, I planted seeds of Vates and Red Russian kale, Swiss chard, Bloomsdale Winter spinach, mizuna, and tatso mustard greens, and two 4' x 8' beds of lettuce. Also garlic for next year.

We had a couple of cold nights so I covered lettuce beds with Reemay, and will probably cover the rest soon. The Reemay protects against wind and insects, and keeps the inside temps a little warmer.

Next year, I will start 2-3 weeks earlier. Most of the seedlings are still fairly small and need a couple of weeks before they are big enough to harvest.

dekprizm Hi ML - do you keep your greens right in the jugs or do you plant outside and cover? I want fresh greens too!! :)

Normally I start them around Feb and transplant out in March. This year think wanted some winter salads so figure to keep them in the jugs and if a hard freeze will keep them in side at night if under 20 degrees at night. Ie basement. I have alot of Kale going right now in the garden no protection.

I planted lettuce seeds and sugar snap peas in the first week of August. We've already had about 60 salads.

The trick here in Zone 7 is that you need to shade the lettuce (planted out in the veggie garden) a bit in the afternoon sun when it reaches above 80.

This morning I picked more lettuce and beans - wished I had done more - and now I will see what happens when we get our first frost - I just may cover the lettuce over night and hope for the best.

mlcom: From what I've read, kale, collards, Swiss chard, and cabbage don't need much protection. The flavor of collards and kale improves after a freeze or two.
