Newbie + recevied first seed order = excited

This winter will be my first year for winter sowing. I have been collecting free seeds from family (luckily, I have an uncle who has huge gardens). I've collected so far about 25 different types including daylillies, hostas, dahlias, marigolds, zinnias, yucca, black-eyed susans, purple coneflower, fern-leaf tansi, petunia, balloon flower, blanket flower, trumpet vine, etc.

I couldn't resist ordering from cheapseeds.com. I received my order yestery of: black-eyed susan vine, Indian Spring Hollyhock, Chicory (mostly for my uncle), five spot, love in a mist, heavenly blue morning glory, painted daisy, pansy swiss giants, rose mallow, and a free packet of gloriosa daisy.

We've had a LOT of rain here during October. This weekend is supposed to approach the mid-70s! so I plan on preparing my gallon milk jugs. I'm probably going to have to limit it to about 25 though. Not quite sure how I'm going to do that yet . . . :-D

Nice selection of seeds! I ordered from cheapseeds too! Good luck with that 25 container limit...once you start it's very hard to stop. ;)

I tend to be a bit obsessive with my hobbies. For example, I'll read a 600 page book in one day or I'll plant a 80'x30' veggie garden crammed full. . . for only two people and I do ALL the work. Or I record about 20 tv series per week on my DVR. I have a Pringles superstack can FULL of marigold seeds. Now we all know unless I'm seeding an ACRE that I won't ever need that many. I've had to collect every dahlia seed that I possibly can. . . . like I said. Obsessive. I don't see me stopping at just 25!

One newbie question. I want to fill my gallon milk jugs soon with soil. However, if I fill them now and they're in an unheated milk shed (little 10x10' building) until I want to put the seeds in like January, what do I do if the jugs are frozen solid?

I have yet to order my seeds, but hope too soon. This will be my first year WS. I was at the bank yesterday, and they have a bunch of Black Eyed Susans that are done for the year. I was thinking of hoping out of the car to collect seeds. Though decided it would just be easier to order a pack lol.

If the jugs are frozen solid, just wet them a bit with warm water. Then sow your seeds pressing them firmly into the melted layer. Chances are they will refreeze, but that's what they do in nature anyway. You'll get sprouts when the time is right.

Bookjunkie,
Which seeds will you be sowing in Jan.?
All perennials?I think you may want to wait closer to spring for your annuals.

cAROL:
My understanding is that I can WS anything that is perennial in my zone or that reseeds itself in my zone. Is that correct?
