What has been your experience of the most requested seeds asked for in trades/exchanges? Token, since you ran the wintersowing swap last year, I bet you have a good idea. I realize that it depends on individual taste in flowers, zones conditions, and if people have a certain style of gardening, color schemes and another factor probably would be "easy to grow" Do people order more perennials vs annuals? Just a curious question this morning.

I've been trading on GW for about 10 years or so, and Pippi21, it really does depend. Lots of times it's whatever new seed came out last year and was collected and can be traded. These last 2-3 years for me it's been heirloom veggies because I personally have quite a few. If I get access to very obscure tomatoes or beans - it is them. If I find that a flower has mutated for me, crossed in a very particular and unusual way - it's that. I find much fewer people ask me for the more common varieties and annuals (unless they are very unique). But it changes. I notice this year people are more interested in annuals.

This is my first year trading so that's all I can report about. I posted the white peony poppy seeds I got from the 'White Cloud' I planted (seeds from Hazzard's) for trade on the seed exchange and have had like 10 emails so far asking to trade for them. Posted white balloon flower (a MUCH nicer perennial if you ask me) seeds for trade and got 3 hits. The poppies do have a WOW factor but the foliage is ratty and they bloom so early, all you have from June - frost is ratty foliage. The balloon flowers bloom late summer and look pretty good right up until November. Everyone has different priorities/tastes/visual requirements. I think I got more of a kick out of the peony poppy seedpods than I did the flowers. They form those little round "pepper shakers" and the seeds literally pour out of them. I may grow them again just to get the seeds for trading.

I completely agree with GGG. Obscure heirloom veggies are the hot item on any trade list--well, that's if the people looking at your list are heirloom veggie gardeners. At WinterSown I offer a list of about 150 tomatoes for people, the requests I receive are sometimes reflective of online discussions.

Along with heirloom eatable seeds, anything that tolerates full shade that is a perennial. Coral bells, heuchera (forgive me if I spelled that wrong) is a big one, any variety.
|
The most popular for me seems to be the corkscrew vines.

I noticed that heuchera is a really biggy this year too, countrycarolyn. So many shade plants tend to grow by division, or are fleeting and so the seed is hard to "catch". Interestingly enough, I've been asked several times for shrub seeds and I see more and more people asking for trees. Planting tree seeds is such a hopeful and optimistic thing to do. It makes me smile every time I see someone ask or offer them!

Especially native trees that produce fruit!! I am like you happy they are being requested, and happy to find them.
