Micki, I see you don't have your zone or state in your user name sign in line - where you live can make a difference in the answers you might get to some of your sowing questions.

I know you mentioned 60F someplace earlier so you sure aren't here! But I have to pay special attention to the sowing medium and drainage in my wet location where others could be a little more casual. On the other hand, I've never had to water a container, or be concerned seedlings could cook with too hot sun....

I'm starting a new link and showing some pics of my progress so far. I live in the NE, zone 6 Western PA. Today is an unseasonally warm, loving it.

I don't put holes in the tops of my WS jugs. I'm in north central CT 2 miles south of the MA state line. My WS jugs get lined up either side of my east-west breezeway. I did put holes in the top of some jugs when I summer sowed this year but since I keep my containers in the shade, they don't get any direct sun and the seedlings do fine.

I"m in zone 8. If we don't put holes in our ws containers we get fried mush. Interiors of containers are typically 20 degrees warmer than the exterior on a sunny day (Donn, mentioned this a few years back). Good to know if you get erratic winter or early spring temperatures!

Here in Z:4 I do not put any holes in the tops, by the time it warms up here the tops are ready to take off or open depending on how one prepares the container.

I think 2 inches up may be a little too high up to prevent drowning. Look at commercial pots and you'll find them right along the bottom edge. I no longer put holes in the tops of my containers, but then, mine are in shade. Daily monitoring for moisture is recommended. Good luck!!!

Without caps on the milkjugs you don't need any other holes for the top. The shape of the container is such that hot air funnels out like a flue.
