Do most of you wire your containers shut or tape them? Do they dry out faster if wired?

I think either is fine. I am lazy and i cut the whole thing and shove the top into the bottom. I do that with all mine cause then I get to skip the tape and wires etc :)

For me everything is mostly frozen so they don't seem to dry at all.

No difference. I cut my jugs so there's a hinge and on the side opposite the hinge I take a hand paper punch and punch a hole on the bottom and one on the top and twist tie together. The first couple years I used duct tape but with doing hundreds of jugs I got tired of buying duct tape. I have never completely closed up the side seams (where top and bottom meet) for the side seams lets in moisture.

I think taping is faster and easier--but if you can do the manipulations then the wire lets you go in and out of the container when you want without having to deal with cutting the seal and retaping the container.

Thanks for those answers. Sandy you answered the other thing I was wondering about concerning completly taping shut. Good to know one dont need to go thru all that effort. Since it doesnt matter about wire or tape, then I will prob just tear a short strip off, just enough to hold it shut.

I've found that tape gets useless after a couple of open/close days. Now I use the hole punch method except I use pipe cleaners instead of twist ties to hold the top to the bottom. There's more to get a grip on than a twist tie (which usually get wet and then the paper wrapper disintegrates). I found no difference when it comes to moisture in the potting mix....

Kris - I like the pipe cleaner idea. I know I have tons of them from my crafting days gone buy!

I too like your pipe cleaner idea. I imagine they could maybe be recycled from year to year too, couldn't they?

Pipe cleaners recycle well. They also come in colors and in some cases I used different colors on jugs w/certain seeds (ie: "hard to start - be patient!" -or- "less water", etc).

Kris, your color coding idea is fantastic.
