A few years ago I tried a wall of water planter to start tomato seeds. It worked fine the first year but after that the sides developed leaks so I gave up on that method. Today while rinsing out a 1/2 gal. plastic cider jug I had an idea. What if I tied/glued about 8 jugs together to form a hollow square, filled them with water and planted a few seeds inside the square. I am going to try this this year, who knows, it might work.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to post a pic. Have you seen the wall of water kits? Basically it is a ring of plastic tubes that you fill with water to adsorb heat during the day which is then released at night to keep your seedling warm in the winter. My idea is to make a circle of square sided jugs stuck together and filled with water to do the same thing. You plant the seeds in the ground inside the circle of water filled jugs. You could probably use large soda bottles too. Just remember not to put the caps back on as this will cause the bottles to crack if the water froze.

I think it is worth a try. The only thing is will the 1/2 jugs be tall enough to offer adequate protection. I think the wall of water cones are higher.

Use 2 liter bottles instead. You can duct tape them together to create a ring. It works great for tomatoes.

Although many 2L water jugs will probably work better then a single wall o water (wow), I started using 2' (Home Depot) bamboo sticks (4-5 per plant) to create a tee pee inside the wow. Even without leaks, my wows would collapse. It is horrifying to witness that!! With the bamboo, I haven't had a single wow ruin a plant, even with heavy snows. HUGE for my piece of mind. I have had the tops of plants get chilled but the purpose of the wow is earlier root development. The tops will recover if the whole plant isn't killed.

My experience was that the two liter soft drink bottles worked better than the Wall-O-(bloody-collapsing-leaking - algae capturing - hard to store empty and store over the winter - too expensive to start with contraptions).

Been pretty lucky with making home made ones even out of a circle of milk jugs filled with water sitting around the plants. Even water bottles filled and duct taped into a circl work. The concept on wow's is great but they are difficult to keep upright. ML |
