ISO Favorite Seed Companies

| Hi all:
I'm ordering catalogs now & have a quick question. Aside from seed you collect or swap, what are your favorite seed companies?
What companies offer the best selection?
Where do you find seeds for unusual/new plants?
What companies give the most bang for your buck? (I just read about valueseeds today).
Thanks!
Pam

Some of my favorites for selection: Swallowtail, American Meadows, and Praire Moon. I also order from Thompson & Morgan occasionally.

I've had good luck with Johnny's Seeds out of Maine. American Meadows is having a 50% off sale now on a lot of items (mostly bulbs and plants). You can also find coupons for American Meadows ($5.00 off $30.00 coupon code SAVE and $10.00 off $50.00 coupon code LOYAL) at http://www.tjoos.com/Coupon/80752/American-Meadows. I have no idea if these are still working. You can't beat ValueSeeds as you've discovered for the seeds they offer - not alot of unusual or new seeds but great prices for the amount of seeds and low flat shipping. Aside from this forum (which is great!), check before you buy on the Garden Watchdog on Dave's Garden site. American Meadows has great ratings. The Garden Watchdog rates a lot of web based nurseries. Good Luck.

Has anyone else tried Diane's Flower Seeds? She's on the 'Watchdog 30' list on Dave's Garden. I bought perennial seeds from her this year and was very impressed with the quality/germination rate plus her detailed planting instructions really helped. The white baptisia I grew from seed is more than a foot tall. If you have a question she responds really fast via email too. My seeds arrived within days of me placing the order.

Yes, I'd recommend Diane's. Karen

FYI--see the post by ms.sunshine on the link below re: list of companies offering seeds supplied by seminis (owned by monsanto). Some nice companies I've used: Select Seeds Co. JL Hudson, Seedsman Pinetree Seeds
Here is a link that might be useful: companies offering seeds from seminis

I like many of the ones already mentioned. There is also specialty perennials (hardyplants.com). I just recently ran across this site. Has anyone ordered from them? Sample Seed Shop (sampleseeds.com) Their seeds are mostly a dollar a packet, hard to beat. Lois in PA

Oh, is that THE "remy?" I'm assuming so, since she's teaching a WS class. I would have no issues ordering from her. Go for it. Thanks for the link!
RE: ISO Favorite Seed Companies

Hey, sure is our Remy! I remember that picture from Ron's gallery of wintersower's photos. I didn't know she'd started a seed company. Ron, do you still have that photo here somewhere, or on your online album? Would be interesting to see who's still around. I know a lot don't post anymore, but I think a fair number are still with us. Karen

I ordered from hardyplants.com before reading all the negative posts on Daves Garden. I started to panic because I stupidly offered the seeds in trades before receiving the order. Many negative posts share that the shipping took months and the customer service is poor. In my panic, I contacted my credit card company and said I wasn't sure I would receive my order. Not sure if this helped but I received my order in less then two weeks. I also duplicated the ordering by placing orders with other companies. All orders were received within days of one another. The quantities from hardyplants was impressive. I will order from hardyplants again but allow for a longer shipping time. I am definitely ordering from Remy:)) Thanks for the post. My favorite sites are T&M, valueseeds, Swallowtail, Pinetree and Baker Creek. I have had great luck with the companies listed on the seminis link, but I don't want to promote Monsantos so I'll limit orders from those sites.

I also ordered from cheapseeds.com this year. HUGE amounts, but not a lot of variety. I'm interested to see what the germination rate really is. They claim 98% on the 4 packs I bought.
RE: ISO Favorite Seed Companies

Many thanks! This is an impressive list of seed sources, and I was not familiar with most of them. Diane's site offers a good selection of seeds. I'm working through the list now. Thanks again!

Hi, here are a few; Watersuntogether.com mostly common types .99 cents (Burpee) Summerhillseeds.com wonderful customer service & some different varieties. Sunrise seeds I haven't this one yet, good prices nice variety Best wishes, Wendey

Thanks, Wendey. I'm working on a master list of recommended seed companies.

Diane's Seeds - good amount of seed for good price and great germination Johnny's Seeds - found a few things I wanted all in one place for a change Hardy Plants - family run operation that gets a little behind at times but with a nudge or two mails out seeds and they have extensive selection I can buy Burpee in stores so don't like to pay for shipping unless I need 10 packs for free shipping on Watersuntogether. I've purchased from Park and T&M but expensive unless on sale. Heard from grower that T&M seed aren't always the freshest but don't think they could stay in business all these years if they had a huge problem. Valueseeds is a good buy if you want their limited inventory at the time they're having blowout sale. T&M has changed their website and it's a pain to navigate easily now. When I click on particular seed from internet search I don't get to specific page and have to navigate from their left sidebar. Their search function isn't working dependably either. Maybe it's my computer if no one else is having a problem. Not buyer friendly site for me right now...even to browse and check zone info and pics. Bad thing about online seed purchasing is I end up using 3 or 4 different vendors and paying shipping to each one instead of being able to purchase what I want/need from 1 or 2 vendors. Once the seeds hit the stores I end up impulse buying a little of this and a little of that from any vendor...some of which I never sow or promptly gets eaten by some critter. Select Seeds has a lovely assortment of seeds and plants. Haven't ordered from them yet although if I find a few seeds I can use I'd probably break down. Have no idea what their germination is but I'm genuinely seduced by their site photos and descriptions. I'm so easy.

I didn't see Sandhill Preservation, Fedco or Kitazawa listed yet. All are very good and worth looking at. They are on our family favorite's list, along with Johnny's, T&M, Valueseed, Swallowtail, Hudson Seed Co, and Horizon Herb. Also, T's Seeds is a one person operation but also very good - especially good for mixed daylily seeds. Lynda

I used cheapseeds.com for some of my common perenials. I got a bunch of creeping thyme seeds to WS. Others are great but I am super cheap :) Karen
RE: ISO Favorite Seed Companies

Crosmans seed is good. Decent selection, insanely cheap. They are quick but you have to order on a form instead of online. I placed an order by phone and it arrived two days later. Amy
RE: ISO Favorite Seed Companies

I got the creeping thyme too. That's where I got my Siberian Wallflowers too. You think with a name like that, they'll be great candidates for wintersowing. I've got 4000+ seeds in that pack according to their website. 9000+ seeds of creeping thyme.
RE: ISO Favorite Seed Companies

I recently ordered from sampleseed.com. Remy was extremely helpful and very fast turnaround. I'd go back to buy there again.
