Collecting Nasturtiums, still green?

I am waiting and waiting to collect nasturtiums seeds and the seed capsules don't seem to be getting any less green. How do you know when they are ripe? Thanks :-)

I hear ya, I noticed that they are still green even when they fall off the plant on their own. Mine even stayed green for, like, two weeks after I picked them.

I guess Ill see how many actually grow next year.

Hi Doris, looks like we are in the same boat. I did find an old GW thread with a reference to a MrBrownThumb article on the subject. I am going to check mine out a little more closely tomorrow.

Here is a link that might be useful: WS nasturtium not setting seed [info re: collecting too]

I don't know if it's the same blog I found, but it said that it didn't seem to matter if the seeds were green when they fell - once they dried they were viable. I found a few green ones last week when I threw out my vines because they were hit pretty early so I am saving them along with my dried ones to see what happens. It'll be another experiment.

I collected all mine still green last year. Worked fine the difference seems to be the size. They tend to turn brown later when drying but not always some keep some green. The ones that dry and are still a good size seem to be best. I have noticed that the more ripe they are the easier they pop off when you collect and some gardeners I know shake them and gather what falls off on it's own.
