Preparing gallon jug question

Posted by bookjunky4life 5/6 (My Page) on

I just did a test run on cutting a jug since I plan on preparing my jugs tomorrow. However, I cut about four inches up all the way around except for an inch or inch and a half directly beneath the handle for the hinge. I then made two holes opposite the handle to use the wire tie to clothes that side. However, the top and bottom don't fit together perfectly and there is like a half inch gap. Am I doing something incorrectly? Can someone post a close up photo?

I can never get a perfect cut, it doesn't really seem to hurt. I like to think of it as added ventilation. I'm convinced it actually helps on those prematurely warm spring days when I forget to take my tops off.

I don't think a gap is an issue either.

I even stopped taping/securing the lid back on, after getting lazy after a few waterings last year.

gaps don't matter. It just needs to be closed so the top doesn't blow off. I tried the wire-ties one year, and while I liked it, I still figured one strip of duct tape did the job.
When I did the bread-ties, I put 2 holes in the top, and two holes in the bottom, so they were 'U' shaped and the top could slide down into the bottom just a bit. Then I could just bend the tie into a "U," shove it into one hole and back out the other and just twist it on the outside of the jug.
But seriously, don't worry about the gap.

I have 26 jugs so far. Mostly milk jugs, but also Sunny D jugs (which I actually prefer).
