Newbie question about marigold seed sowing

Hi everyone,

Getting ready for my first time winter sowing and had a question about winter sowing marigold seeds.

The seeds I'm planning to winter sow and put outside in milk jugs in December are all perennial seeds that need cold stratification...

But I do have some annual seeds like these marigold seeds I wanted to try too...can I winter sow those like the others (put them outdoors in their milk jugs in December) or should I wait until March to sow them in the milk jugs outdoors?

I'm in zone 6, in PA.

Thanks in advance...

Marigolds are fine to wait until the end of Winter to WS.

Hi Trudi d, thanks so much for the info. I'll wait until the end of winter to sow the marigolds then.

Also, many thanks for all the wonderful FAQ sheets and info you've provided about winter sowing! I'm so excited to get started.

Marigolds are easy planted in spring. These were planted in late March, I think. They looked like this in May.

Marigolds are the second plant available here right after the dianthus. Just protect them from severe freezes and frost and you'll be okay. I sowed mine in mid March. You might want to wait until early April.

Karen, I recognize the bottom of a milk jug.

As always, WS sprouts have some awesome roots!

Wow, kqcrna, those marigolds look so healthy! If sowing them works, it will save me some money since I won't have to buy marigolds plants every year...thanks again everyone!

RE: Newbie question about marigold seed sowing

For what it's worth, my records show that I usually WS marigolds in mid to late March, although one year I did them in mid-February.

I say "for what it's worth" because I don't have much rhyme or reason to my WSing. I don't usually start till late January, even early February, and while I do WS my perennials first, after that, it's just a kind of looking in the seed box on any particular day and thinking, hmm, what do I feel like sowing?

I do WS first things that are known to be good reseeders, so I will take that into account. But except for vegetables, which I do in late March to April, I don't usually intentionally hold off on things. I just sow what I feel like sowing that day.

The great thing is that it still works for me. The funny thing is that in most areas of my life I tend to overthink things. Never really did that with WSing, and that's been a wonderful thing for me (both the actual WSing and the results, and the fact that it works without thinking too much, lol!)

Good luck and have fun!
:)
Dee
