ibartoo - there's a list of plants suitable for WS in Z8 in the FAQs. I've posted a link to the list below. Annuals, perennials, trees, ornamental grasses are good WS candidates in your zone if they normally grow in your zone and produce viable seeds. Hosta does not need cold stratification--I grew it from my own seeds that I sowed in pots in June 2009 before I discovered winter sowing. In my experience, daylilies also don't need cold stratification in order to germinate. I've grown apple, pear and dogwood trees from seed via WS. Sorry, I've never tried agapanthus so hopefully someone else will jump in with their experience.

I would spring sow the Agapanthus. -It self sows to the point of weediness here and tends to sprout when day temps are in the high 60's/low 70's.

Thanks Gardenweed and SusanC,I will spend a lot of time reading the plant list and faq's. I tried wsing last year and I managed to grow just 1 shasta daisy. I know what I did wrong tho, so this year i am making better plans.

Any perennial that requires a moist chill will make a perfect candidate for winter sowing. Putting the seed pots outside exposes them to cool days and cooler nights in a zone 8, and has them conditioned to sprout as the weather begins to warm again.

That's not to say that only things that require the chill can be winter sown, just that seeds with those conditions needed to break dormancy are the first and obvious choices.
