| This is the first thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as "Zone Wars"). The count runs from Dec 21, 2012 - May 1, 2013 Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have winter-sown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count thus far. For example: How To Count Containers: How to List your Zone: If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example: If your member page lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a. Containers that were sown before December 21, 2012 or after 23:59 May 1, 2013 do not count in this year's Zone Wars, but please sow lots in between!! To see the latest count, click on the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet. To see previous Container Count threads, click on this list of Zone Wars Threads prepared by River_crossroads. Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate. Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged! Every container counts so join the fun!! ~ Happy Sowing ~ |

| Hi guys! I tried to get some solstice sowing done this year, which would be the first year I've ever done so, and stayed up real late last night organizing seeds and filling containers. But alas, the sowing has gone so slowly, intermingled with sleep and the usual household chores, and it was not done until this afternoon. My first 9 containers for zone 5. I am SO excited about these seeds! There are all trees and shrubs, including some are rare and exotic native seeds like Franklinia alatamaha and native Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens).

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 308 Good morning, winter sowers. Hope everybody is having a great start to the new year! Ladyrose can you double check your total - you posted 15 and 7 containers. Littlelithop, is your total 41 or 71? You only need to post your personal total - the spreadsheet will total the zone. :) Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. |

| Wow, zone 6, we're falling behind already! I won't be starting for another few weeks, most likely, but I still love to come and see the count. I'm already starting to feel guilty because I wasn't planning on sowing my usual 225-250 jugs this season. Maybe I need to rethink that to help out my fellow zone sixers... Terrene, that is a fabulous little milk jug graphic - love it! And thank you so much for taking this on. Dee |

| Hello, sounds like fun. I'm new to gardening and live in zone 10, so I don't have a frost date(@ least thats what another site said)but I read about winter sowing and love the concept because I don't have room to sow inside, so I'm going to try anyways! Off to fill some jugs. Be back later with a count :) |

| Hi Dee! Thanks for the support! If you decide to do your usual 250 containers, they will be most welcome in the count. :) Littlelithop, no prob, we love newbies and hopefully you will love Wsing! Socalgardengal, I am not sure how someone winter-sows in a climate with no winter, lol?! But AFAIC, you are welcome to participate in the count, since you will be using Trudi's wonderful winter-sowing method. After all, we count all the spring-sown containers. Hmmmm....we will need to add a column for zone 10...not a zone that is often counted, I don't think, lol. Happy sowing guys! |

| Thanks for the warm welcome Terrene. I know it's a bit odd for me to winter sow but what the heck, lol. It has been pretty cold here at night for the past 2-3 weeks. In the low 40's. Maybe you can put my count towards the zone with the lowest #. That way I won't be all alone :) I did 12 jugs last night, mostly flowers. |

| 11 more for zone 4! Terrene, I am very excited to find a way to have beautiful plants without it costing so much. Plants are so expensive! I hope I get good results because I am already thinking about next year! Socalgardengal, my family is the same way. I have always been interested in plants. Now we have a big back yard. :) My husband thinks I just need a challenge, I say I'm saving money, he says what ever makes you happy. Haha What would make me happy is if I would have started my second bed in the fall. Will remember to do that this year. I have a quick question if someone could answer. Does hosta seed need shade to germinate or morning sun? I have them by a fence behind a med pine so they never get direct sunlight. Do they need more sun? My yard faces south so I can provide sun or shade. Thanks! |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 487 Good morning, winter sowers. Zone 5 has a commanding lead so far! Socalgal, I think it is a good idea to put you in zone 9. You might still be alone there, or have only 1 or 2 comrades, because that is not a busy zone either in the count. Littlelithop, all I can say is growing from seed is the greatest! You can have lush gardens and such a variety of plants, very inexpensively. Winter-sowing makes it even more economical - recycled containers, no electricity, seed trades, etc. Pdsavage - lovely WS pot ghetto you've got going there! :) Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. |

| Noooooooooo,LOL! My seeds are sprouting already, it's been in the 60's-70-s in the day and low 40's at night and for the first time in over 100 years we are expecting a major frost at the coast, dipping into the mid teens to low 20's for the next 4 nights. Sho uld I leave them outside or bring them in? I have no clue, first timer here. Thanks for any help :) About to give up and wait til spring |
|

| Socalgardengal, I have the same problem here, my seeds are sprouting. That's why I've been holding off any further Wsing. It's in the 50's here, but cold at night. I got sprouts! WS's in higher zones do you all have sprouts? |
|
| Hey Socalgal, if you are going to get temps that low, I would definitely move your seedlings inside, or a protected location outside that won't get hit by frost (for example, against the foundation of my house it is significantly warmer than out in the landscape). Ladyrose, do you have your containers in a spot that get a lot of sun? The containers act like mini-greenhouses, and the temps can get very warm even in the winter, if located in southern exposure and full sun. Mine are on the east side of the house, get morning sun only. |

| Holy Cow! And I was so proud of my TWO containers. I am very new to this and thought I couldn't do this yet so I am surprised at the number of people who are winter sowing in December. I thought that if the germination date was 40 days, for example, I'd have to start this forty days before last frost date. Does that make sense? So now that I see that the germination period is really a non-issue, I feel I can plant more, although I do intend to learn more about this. So post TWO Fresca bottles for Zone 6. Our ravaged area (thank you, Sandy) will produce again! |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 1,752 Good morning, winter sowers! Welcome to the count SKimS and connie-K. Socalgal, I laughed when I read your post. I think if you put the seeds in the fridge, that would be fine to simulate winter. It is usually recommended that people refrigerate seeds in moist seed starter mix (or something equivalent) to simulate cold stratification. However, winter-sowing does that a whole lot easier for us! (Well, for thus of us who have a winter, lol). Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. |
