Disappointed

Couldn't sleep last night - must be that winter full moon or my ancestors are calling... Anyway, I was checking skies for eclipse, meteores etc. Nothing - skies completely covered with clouds. Looks like I have to wait another few hundred years. Meanwhile, excited to start sowing!
Happy sowing everyone!

Same here. Set the alarm, got up, it was so bright out, couldn't find the moon.

Promised my brother I'd wake him if it turned blood red. Saw a few shooting stars. Saw the first thirty minutes of totality. Watched the clouds roll in around 2:05am. Thought maybe it would magically change colors for me if I got to :17 but no luck.

In other news, we had the bomb squad roll out down the street yesterday. Helicopters flying overhead. It was an eventful evening. I'm resisting the urge to fill up my full tank at exxon where it happened just to ask how it played out. I'm sure they'll have their ears falling off by the end of the day.

I would loooooove to go back to bed now, but I've got seeds to sow. *squee*

Was snowing here...couldn't see a thing...

RE: Disappointed

It's been snowing here for the past two days. Clouds too thick to see anything. My boyfriend and I had planned on eclipse-watching, but it was simply not happening. :-(

Based on a friend's recommendation, we watched "Hogfather" courtesy of Netflix. I definitely recommend it for anyone in need of some giggles. :-) It's a holiday movie - the Hogfather is Discworld's version of Santa. You don't need to be familiar with Terry Pratchett; just keep in mind that Discworld is an alternate reality with its own demented logic.

I missed the transition. But it was a very clear out. There was this prominent, beautiful ring around a very bright moon.

I wish we get some snow here! It's windy and dry!

ladyrose65 - that prominent ring around the moon is called a moon dog. Years ago I was aboard a schooner sailing from Boston to Maine after the Tall Ships. I was on night watch and there was this stunning ring around the moon. I didn't have a digital camera at the time but took a shot over the boom. Picture came out great, almost as if the moon was smiling! I found this image on Google:

A similar ring around the sun is called a sun dog and generally signals a weather change.

RE: Disappointed

In our area a sun dog is a reflection of the sun next to the actual sun. On a very cold winter one can see three suns--a sun dog on each side and the actual sun in the middle.

I had not known that a ring around the sun is also called a sun dog. The things one learns on this forum.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sun Dogs

RE: Disappointed

Does the sun dog reflection where you are have any foretelling associated with it?

Standing on the deck of an 88-year-old wooden schooner in Maine is not where you want to be when you see a sun dog, at least not the sun dog referred to in nautical terms. With the bright sun overhead, the weather "change" can only mean bad weather is coming.

RE: Disappointed

I stayed up that night to catch it all and to hope that the clouds would move out of the area. They never did!! So I stayed up for nothing, and I was tired at 10:30. Oh well, I have august to look forward to. That is one of the best meteor showers I have ever had the chance to see.

RE: Disappointed

I don't recall any foretelling, just that it will be a very, very cold day.
