I don't have alot of time before work today so here it goes:

I have asked permission from seedmama to copy some of her stuff-

PLEASE DON'T START A NEW THREAD-all this will go to my email

Will try to give a running total each evening and for sure each week-

what is a container? will go over this later!!LOL!! thinking one milk jug or liter pop jug will count as "one"

Any comments or suggestions are welcome..please!

Marks, get set, GO!!!

RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

do 2 l. water bottles count as one, they are basically the same as pop bottles?

 o
RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

WooHOO! Thanks for doing this Brandy.

The deadline is May 1, right? A container is anything that holds one variety of seed, from a drink cup to a sweater storage box. However, if you sow multiple types of seed in a large container, you can use your own judgement to count them individually or as a single container.

Give up 4 containers for zone 7, please!

Be sure to include your zone in the post. Brandy will need that to keep a running total.

 o
RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

So far for me (in Zone 6)

Dec 21st: 168 containers
Dec 22nd: 224 containers
Dec 23d: 168 containers

Total so far for me: 560 containers. (Zone 6)

And I am DONE! For a while at least. I'll have a few more in January and February and then the tenders in April - but this really was the bulk of what I need to WS this year.

Have fun catching up Token! :) :)

Wow, zone 6 has really taken off out of the gate!

I have sown 3 containers already in zone 5, however they were sown in September and November, so maybe they don't count??

Anyway, happy new Winter-sowing year to everyone and see you later in the winter. :)

RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

What is a " container " ?

I will not try to define a " container ". You use your own judgment. here are some suggestions.

#1... If you use toilet paper rolls, newspaper pots, plant bands, paper cups, peat pots, etc and pack these together under one cover, then perhaps the best way to count these is to count the number of different seeds sown.
Example : 10 different kinds of seeds sown under 1 cover could be counted as 10 containers.

#2... 50 seeds sown in a milk jug or other larger container should count as 1 container.

Posting container count:

Please post only NEW containers and not a running total.
Example: If your 1st post is 30 containers and you later sow another 30 containers your 2nd post should reflect only the additional 30 containers.
You can post your total as long as you indicate the number of new containers.
Example: "Zone 5 : Add 30 more containers for me. My total is now 60. "

Remember to add your zone to each post so we can see totals by zone.

I will update the totals on a regular basis and start a new post as needed.

This is what we have so far!!

RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

Lynda:

560 containers in 3 days before Christmas and you are DONE?

I don't believe it! You'll find several packets of really really neat seeds that fell behind a cabinet and you'll be back.

Planting so many containers this quickly is a testament to your system - using standardized containers that fit into standardized trays and putting them in same sized sacks of 4 mil plastic. Thanks for the info you share so freely.
Good job!!

I'm still thinking (obsessing) about how much of what to order for the beds and the seed farm. I'll continue to obsess on those topics for a while. That's okay. I've decided that WS about learning, making lots of plants, while enjoying the process.

I can't count, apparently. Tonight's total is 136 for me. That makes 140 total including the 4 I sowed on Solstice. I've got a few more to do in the morning. The seeds are all sorted, labels done, just need to do it. Beautiful moon out tonight as I'm hauling 21 containers at a time to the end of the driveway.

 o
RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

No worries token, apparently I can't count either!
I made a grand total for end of year and it didn't match, so I went through them all again! The spread sheet helped and I have a "new and improved" total for end of year.

zone 4-16
zone 5-583
zone 6-743
zone 7-365
zone 8-106
zone 9-80

If this is different that what someone else has please let me know!!!LOL!!
The 80 in zone 9 was from an email sent to me and doesn't show up on the thread.

 o
RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

Brandy, when I add up the zone 7 containers, I get 535. That includes the ones I did last night and those that came before me. The 365 number seems to be the total as of New Years Eve?

Anyhoo, you can go ahead and add another 344 for zone 7. Thanks!

I finished my perennials this morning sowing 8 containers of 28 varieties and 120 9 ounce cups of Rudbeckia hirta. That brings my total to 484, I think. I'm mostly done now except for the few stragglers that come in between now and March when I start the annuals.

RE: The Official 2009/10 Container Count

Woohoo - I sowed ONE container today LOL. Please add one to zone 9.

I'll be sowing lots more, I promise :) But Wintersowing in zone 9 is just the same as elsewhere, as most everything will sprout immediately, and anything needing cold to germinate will have to be put in the fridge or freezer for weeks. Not that I'm complaining mind you, I just love that it got to 66 today, and I was out planting some seedlings of Nicotiana that I had started in the fall. Ah, love sunny winter days in California!
