Countdown~ Eight days to go!

I've got to work outside today and make a place where I can place my containers. We've got a five month old puppy here and she wrecks havoc wherever she goes. We call her 'Velvet Head the Destroyer', her name is Emily Nina. So, I'll be dragging lawn furiture and outdoor tables around to make a safe haven.

YIPPEE!!!! YIPPEE!!!!

I am looking up alot of things too. Trying to start a data base of my seeds! I may have to do it as I WS it!! That will slow me down but I thought if it is something I absolutely love then I will want to sow more of it vs. something that is so/so or hard to grow than I'll want to sow less of it. I don't know that info til I look it up! LOL

What info can you gals give me on WS columbine? On another forum they said it's hard to WS? I am completely bumming out if that is true as I LOVE COLUMBINES!!!

RE: Not real sure!!

I have always heard it needs to be stratified. I have tried to sow it in march, with little to no germination. I think one germinated. I am going to sow some on winter solstice, though my seeds are not fresh so who knows. The seeds are actually ones I was going to ws last year, but never did. I actually got the seeds in a sasbe, so there is noooo telling how old they are.

Though tiffy was correct it is a slow germinator!! Suppose to germinate in the summer.

I WS'ed Columbine last year and got pretty good germination. I didn't cold strat them first. I figured spending the winter outdoors would handle it for me. I think I planted mine in January or February.

RE: clarification

I should of clarified that, erika is right!! If you winter sow it outside in the cold time frame that it requires cold treatment you don't have to do the stratification process prior to wsing.

My vaccinium needs 2 to 3 months cold period before germination, so I will plant dry seeds this month.

Hi,
I wouldn't worry too much about the columbine, maybe just sow more than you want. I ws'd it last year and had fine germination. I just did 2 containers and both germinated. I think I sowed them the first week of Feb. They did take a while to sprout, some of the last jugs for me, sometime in middle of April. I hope they bloom this spring! good luck.

Looks as I am growing several hybrids. I just had no clue till I did my searches. Oh well!!

Do any of you know if it matters if the columbine seeds are old?? Aquilegia Canandensis is the one I have.
