Has anyone in zone 5 or 5/6 WS petunias in January? I am about 20 minutes north of Toledo, in Michigan, on the lake. Any info would be appreciated! Shirley!!

I've done them the last two years with the outside winter sow method. I believe I start them later after frost though. They are frost tender. It takes them awhile to get started but then they really go.
Here are my sprouts in the summer

And a bloom that lasted in the fall.
Petunia Pink
This year I had them blooming wonderfully right up until our first really hard frost.

I've never sown any petunia seeds and swear by PW brand. I love their Supertunia bubble gum pink variety. Last year I tried the Raspberry blast and was so disappointed, will go back to my bubble gum pink variety this summer. Could one save the dried pods from their brand and sow them the following year for my own use?

I've WSed petunias anywhere from January to March, without a problem, and with great germination. Plus, they reseed like crazy in my pots.

pippi - you could save the pods and sow for your own use, but you most likely won't get anything that looks like the original. But .... why not try and see what happens?

Thanks, everyone! I'm thinking I'll do a "leap of faith" and get them out there in the middle of January, if I can wait that long!
Floodthelast-loved the first pic, reminds of what it will be like in 3 months!!

I've been recollecting from my petunias every year. I started with a wave type. I can't say they are as vigorous but they are as pink. : )

I wintersowed my first Laura Bush petunias last year in mid February, out of 3 cups (large styrofoam, my favourites) only 1 germinated - I had no high hopes for them

But in mid July they started blooming and went mad! First they took over the raised bed I transplanted them into; and the tried to take over my whole little garden.

I did not collect any seeds (I was too depressed, because my beloved dog and a great gardening companion had just died). I do hope they reseed here!!! :)

Yes I have done petunias sucessfully here for about 3 or so years (as long as I have been wintersowing) Yes there are times when the weather makes it impossible to get a good yield. Petunia do not like the wet, wet spring a few years back alot of the seedlings bit the dust in all the water.

They may start off small but they grow so fast and bloom for months.

Here is some of the samples

Hi Paulan! Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures! They give me hope for the ones I want to WS! I have raised petunias from seeds, using the heatmat/lights system. My success was varied; never had enough survive to look like yours do. I bought all my seeds this year, but hope to harvest some this fall. Do you save the seeds from yours? Thanks again for the beautiful response to my post! Shirley!

Yes I save my seeds. Let me know if you want some of the seeds. This is just a small number of types and colors out there. I am always looking for more colors. Lst year the purple ones just produced so many seeds. The yellow not so much.

Paulan-Thanks for the kind offer; if I fail miserably in my attempt to save seeds, I'll probably get back to you. One of my two WS goals for this year is to harvest/save more seeds from the ones I have WS. I've always saved marigolds, jacobs ladder, etc., but nothing WSed yet. I bought all my petunia seeds this year; gets a little expensive. Would really like to harvest the Pirouette series, if that's possible.
