Has anyone used WSing method to grow green leafy vegetables such as collard, kale, turnip greens, Lettuce etc. If yes can you share your experience, when do you start? or you would rather direct sow them as some of the plants don't like transplanting.

I just direct sow many of them, I don't find I can harvest some any earlier than others. However I do WS/Fall Sow kale, lettuces and cabbages. If you have freezing weather regularly, then go ahead and sow them now like you would any annual flowering plant.

I've only done lettuce but it germinates well. I WS seeds on March 7; they sprouted March 24.

Johnny's Black Kale WSowed on Jan 2011, germinated Feb 25.
Collards Sowed on March 12, germinated March 18
Broccoli sowed on April 11, germinated on April 21st.

The Kale and the Collards are still growing in vegetable garden.

How are you able to grow these vegetables in winter/freezing weather? When did you plant seeds?

I could be growing that too if I'd planned better....sigh!

We have had a very mild winter so far here....perfect for an extended fall garden.

I still have some plants going as well. My arugula and chard are fine - and not protected at all....

Jagudadda. We planted in the end of April. All were WS. They were actually attacked by a Mother Gopher, this summer, who left us one leaf at the top. They grew back.
The weather has been mild.
