winter companion planting?

Has anyone intentionally companion sowed? In other words, have you tried sowing plants in the same container that grow better together in the garden, such as tomatoes and basil. Since my frost free date is late May-early June my plants might spend enough time in their containers that it just might make a difference. Could be a fun experiment.

I'm going to try a variegated leaf type.
