A lot of discussion on petunias. I love them and always used to buy mature plants or seedlings. Last year, for the first time I WSed them (the whitish one). But still, I bought a few 6-packs. In the first container, I planted two bought ones (pink) and one WSed one (whitish). At the end, the WSed one completely took over, you couldn't see any pink. The same with the basket - only one WSed and two bought ones. In Aug whole fence was covered with white flowers.
As Trudi always used to say, those little guys are stronger then anything else.

That's cool. They look very hardy and happy. Now did you WS them this early?

Beautiful flowers. When I winter sow petunias, I always make sure I don't sow them to thick in the container. I swear every seed sprouts. They even self-sow where they were planted the year before. Don

tomgyrll - sorry, don't remeber when I ws'ed. In general, I've discovered winter sowing in, I think, Feb last year. So, most probably, they were ws'ed Feb/March.

Adamark, you are so right. I started WSing petunias after I learned how to save seed from some nursery seedlings and I have been doing it ever since, with great success. I am way up north and I plant them out early - they are very hardy. The hardest thing is prying the little seedlings apart - I find it very hard to sow them thinly. I usually do an intermediate sowing in flats, about 8 plants each for just about 10 days, and they are good enough for containers or the ground. Three years ago, we had a picnic to a park where I saw some beauties - very large, some veined, and I managed (on Labour Day) to collect a few seeds and have had the most beautiful blooms for the past 3 years. The colours are delightful and there's always something new to look forward to. They are beautiful in pots on my deckrail each year, and in the fall, I carefully collect the seeds. Wish I had some pics. to post by this computer is clean out of memory and I can't do very much. Ordered a new one today!! Happy New Year to all!! Northerner. |

Collecting seeds - REAL PAIN- one day not ready, next day, too late. Hope, I was successfull this year. I simply collected whatever I could, I didn't care about the color etc. We'll see this year. Hope evryone had a great New Year, we did.It is great to celebrate a New Year with friends and childtren.... I'm still under the impression...

Ever try growing petunias from seed indoors on a windowsill? Damp off city - I did this one year, WS them the next - nice, hardy plants via WSing. I wouldn't do them any other way.
