I'm not a grower of roses, but I think most rose plants require grafting of cuttings onto root stock. There are some wild roses that spread by seeds, but they are invasive, and really shouldn't be grown in residential gardens.

Martha, you can grow roses from seed. When harvesting the hips from the hybrids most often grown in gardens, you won't get the same rose growing them from seed but you can get roses - some of them quite interesting, you never know what characteristics may be present.

I haven't played with the seeds a lot, but I have grown species rose rosa glauca from seed, it's grown more for the foliage and ornamental hips than the flowers themselves and it comes true from seed not being a hybrid plant.

So DEW27, yes, they need to be stratified and they do winter sow just fine. There are a few on the GW rose forum who do experiment with seed and will assess the flower when they bloom, decide whether to keep or not.
